Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

We're planning our honeymoon and as it stands right now we're thinking of booking a 2-week trip to Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome..... But we're considering replacing Paris with the Amalfi Coast.... FH has already been to the other 3 places we're going (and wants to go again) but I want to make the right choice about Paris or Amalfi because it would be the only part of the trip that would be new to him....

Please help with this decision... I have alot of questions and would appreciate suggestions and advice from anyone who's been to or researched these regions....

1) Which is more romantic for a honeymoon? Paris or the Amalfi Coast?

2) Our honeymoon would be in the very beginning of April (wedding is March 27) so considering the weather, would the Amalfi coast be a good idea? (I've heard it's primarily a beach region and it wouldn't be beach weather in April)

3) No offense to anyone, but a friend of mine said that when she went to Paris, she was denied service several times because she was American and that people were rude to her... Has anyone else had this experience??... (If this happened to us while we were there, FH would be in a bad mood and wanting to leave the whole time LOL)

4) Please share your experience in these places, where you stayed, what you did, etc....

Sorry this is so long and i'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm having a really hard time with this decision and i really need some help.....

Thanks!!

Maria

Re: Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

I think, ultimately it's your deicision, while I think both places are fabulous!

I've been to Paris several years ago and my experience was a good one. The perisan's were nice enough and I did not have a probelm with not being served.

The weather may not be ideal for the amalfi coast, as I think the summer months are best, which is something to think about as well. You may actually be better off going to Paris, weather wise, beacuse its not a beach town.

Either way, the decision you make will be a good one, both cities are beautiful and offer great history and scenary.

Re: Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

I actually had to make this decision a couple months ago and chose the Amalfi Coast, mainly because I had been to Paris and I live in Manhattan so I wanted to get out of the city. Obviously it depends on what you are looking for and you really can't go wrong, but I loved the Amalfi Coast (although it was a little annoying to get there) - it was so beautiful, people were nice and it was just very relaxing and romantic! We stayed in Sorrento which was great since it was easy to do day trips, but a lot of people like to stay in Capri or Positano also.

Re: Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

We went in June so it was in the 80s, from what I read online early April could still be a little cool, like in the 60s. So good for touring/walking around, maybe not great for sitting by the pool.

We don't mind skipping the pools and beaches as long as there are other things we can do and see.... but I don't know if there are

copy and pasted from 2010. wanted to make sure you saw it ;)

i would TOTALLY go to Paris. i was there in the beginning of April and it was beautiful, jeans and a cute top and walking shoes and i was so comfy. it was nice to be able to walk around the city and not sweat to death! the sites are so amazing and romantic, i took a day trip to versailles, the gardens are gorgeous! paris is so romantic. the tower and the gardens surrounding it, the shopping, great night life, great food and WINE! i would go back in a heart beat.

if your HM was in say JUNE i would say go to amalfi bc you will be able to enjoy the coast, but it will be chilly, especially on the water.

the amalfi coast is gorgeous but ROCKY beaches and it will be too cold to go to the beach in April.

Florence is amazing, SO romantic and lots to do and see. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A DAY TRIP TO EITHER SIENA OR SAN GIMIGNANO. (its about an hour train trip-- totally worth it) very old world tuscany. the san lorenzo market it great for shopping and tons of great restuarants. DO NOT go to typical tourist restuarants. your best bet is go down a side road, and if they dont speak english just point to what you want on the menu. the food is SO good and much cheaper! (stayed at the hotel baglioni - VERY close to the train station- great spot, close to all)

Rome - tip- spend the extra money on a hotel that is close to everything. )near the trevi fountain would be good!) there is A LOT of walking, wear good comfy shoes. rome at night is also very romantic. the trevi fountain is beautiful at night. go get some gelato and enjoy the atmosphere. (stayed at the hotel cosmopolita)

VENICE! LOVE IT. take the water take over to Murano and go to a glass blowing factory-- SO COOL! and if you have time take the water taxi to LIDO. omg- soo pretty! looks like its out of a movie. great pizza too! omg st marks square at night is like no other. when i was there (july) there was one orchestra on one side and one on the other and they were alternating who played songs, outdoor cafes and restaurants, artists selling their work in the square. the bell tower, uhhhh youre going to LOVE it!!!!! - stay at a hotel close to st marks square. venice can get very confusing, hard to navigate. i stayed at hotel san marco. great spot.

ETA: i did not experience any rudeness AT ALL! all french people want is for you to TRY to accept their culture. say please and thank you in french and you will be fine!
the only issue we mad was the men. i went with my friends and we were followed to the bars by a few young men, whistling at us and all that.. we actually found a group of american guys and asked them to come out with us. we were fine after that. but im sure you wont have that problem being that you will be with your hubby!
oo and watch out for pick pocketers in the major tourist areas!

my advice, GET GOOD MAPS! and just make yourself familiar with the cities before you go. dont get wrapped up in finding good restaurants, theyre ALL GOOD. just make sure you know where the major sites are compared to where you hotel is. and do a little history research on WHAT you will be looking at, trust me, you will appreciate everything sooooo much more.

HTH! sorry its sooo long. if you have any more questions FM me. im happy to help!

Re: Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

We are going to Paris and Florence for our honeymoon.

We originally wanted to go to Capri and the Amalfi Coast, but decided we didn't want to be in a 'beach region' off season.

In Paris we are staying at the K&K Cayre, which is where many of my coworkers stay for fashion week~so FH and I are going to take everyone's recommendations on where to go and we will be fine.

I will absolutely post a review once I'm back from the honeymoon, but it will be a while since I won't be back from it until Oct 14th.

Re: Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

I was in Paris last April and the weather was beautiful there. The people were as welcoming as could be - it helps to say basics like hi and thank you in their language; they really appreciate it and it goes a long way. The city is just so beautiful. We will be going to Paris and other spots in France for our honeymoon because it's everything I envisioned in a honeymoon. I've never been to the Amalfi Coast (I just know that it's beautiful!) but have travelled around Italy several other times. Italy can be a very overwhelming country (their systems like the trains don't make too much sense, the people can be in your face, albeit nice....). Paris on the other hand is very calm and serene. If I were you, I'd probably forego Rome and do Paris, Venice, Florence, and Amalfi Coast. Another option is for you to take a 1day-2 day excursion from Rome to go to Capri, which is not too far at all. I'm sorry I can't make a direct comparison for you but i hope this helps!

Re: Paris vs. Amalfi Coast

I've never been to the Amalfi Coast, but we were in Paris this past May when we got engaged. We LOVED it. The people were never rude to us. It does help if you learn how to say hello, goodbye and thank you in French, they will appreciate it. We had a great time. If you have any questions, let me know. We were there for 8 days and went everywhere, so I'd be happy to give you some suggestions.

1) Which is more romantic for a honeymoon?
I never been to Paris but been to Amalfi and I feel I would rather go to Paris than the coast.

I went to Amalfi in April the weather was nice, but esp in the beginning of the mth it sometimes rains alot

4) Please share your experience in these places, where you stayed, what you did, etc....
I feel you can spend tops 2days (that is pushing it esp in April)on Amafi coast. From Rome Naples is one hour and half via the Eurostar and three hour drive, it can be done on a two day trip.

In Amafi we stayed in very tiny town called Piano di Sorrento, the food was amazing in Naples. I really think it has the best food in all of Italy.

I lived in Rome so I know it better than New York
FM me any questions

Florence I love it, def take the one hour train ride to Pisa bc it really is a nice little college town

Venice I didnt like I felt it was a too much a tourist trap and the people take advantage of you.

The biggest thing in Italy is always ask the price before buying!!! Don’t buy anything from street vendors who sell food, souvenirs, and liquids
The prices are always triple the real price. A bottle of water from them cost like $4 dollars and in supermarket/deli it cost .15 CENTS!!
My friend bought a replica of a ruin for $8 dollars, the same thing at a vendor near the Spanish steps was $45!!
