i need a passport by 9/28. the 'rush' office says you have to be traveling within 2 weeks but i think the regular offices take 6 weeks. what do you do if you're traveling in between?!

I just called about this exact issue this morning!!!!
Go down to the post office, pay the expediting fee, and also pay overnight to have the application reach the department overnight, AND prepay overnight shipping so the Department of State will send you the application overnight.

Can't blame you there. I did the 6 week expedited thru the normal channels last year and I was biting my nails the whole time. It did show up a few days ahead of schedule; but I vowed never to take that risk again.

Don't waste your time with the post office....IF you go directly to the Passport office to apply 2 weeks before travel, you have nothing to worry about. You can do a will call and pick them up yourself in 1-3 days after you apply.
We did this and had no problems. We went the week before the wedding on a Friday and it was ready Monday. It was about $145 ($85 application fee and $60 rush fee).
