I'm reading the US gov't site on how to change my name on my passport. It says that I have to mail a copy of my marriage license in. Did anyone else do this? I only have 1 copy and don't want to mail the original in. How did everyone else do this?

Re: Passport Help
I think when you get your marriage certificate, you are supposed to ask for enough copies for the whole name change process. I'm sure if you went back there, you'd be able to get another copy.

I would imagine if it says 'mail a copy', you actually mail a photocopy. I can't imagine they'd expect you to mail the original
Wow, I'm totally worng, they do want an original... how are you suposed to anticiapte how many originals you're going to need for name changes? The gov't is so annoying..

Re: Passport Help
You have to pay for additional copies, and there's no reason I would want to pay for additional copies.
The passport forms say you have to send an original marriage license or a certified copy. I'm not sure what a certified copy is, though. They say they'll mail you back your original but I'm not willing to risk that, nor am I willing to give up my marriage license for a few weeks because I'll probably find another bank or something I'll need it for.
I think you can just go in person to a passport facility with the original and you can still keep it, but I'm not sure. Has anyone on here changed their passports yet?

Re: Passport Help
From what I've seen on the 09 boards, they've all s*cked it up and paid the extra cash. I'd pay an extra $100 for 2 or 3 copies just for my peace of mind. The government will find any way to squeeze every last dime out of us. I don't think a photocopy would be considered 'certified'.

Re: Passport Help
I ordered three certified copies of my marriage certificate when I went to get the original. I needed the original (or certified copy) to get a new passport, new social security card and new license. I also needed it at the bank.
The only time I actually had to send it in (versus just showing it to someone) was with the passport. The certificate was returned to me in a separate envelope 2 days after I received my new passport.
I also recommend giving a copy to your parents for safe keeping in case you lose one yourself.

Did you do your passport in person? I don't want to give them my actual marriage license. Can you just show it to them?

You have to give it to them and they will mail it back to you. It is not a big deal it take a few weeks.

Re: Passport Help
An fyi, if you get or renew a passport with your maiden name, you have up to one year to send in the name change form without being charged an additional fee. Mine is expiring now so I can get a new one, and then after May 1, get the name change for free.

I applied via mail so I had to send in my certificate. I had two other copies at home so wasn't super stressed that they would lose it.
