My fiance and I did that . You can go to the passport office, there is one in Manhattan and one in CT. We went to CT because we didn't feel like dealing with the city. I believe that you have to call for an appt. Then once you get there its like a DMV situation. It really wasn't that bad though. You have to pay a little extra for it but its worth it. You can wait for it to get done , like an hour or two or pay to have it overnighted to you.
The one in CT is in Stamford. I believe right across from the Metro North railroad station.
FH and I did this as well. He needed it ASAP for work purposes and we went down to the place-- on Varick I think. You have to have an appt though. And they tell you to come back a few hours later to pick it up.
I'm pretty sure you have to be traveling within 14 days (and be able to prove that) to get your passport in one day at the agency...
I've been to the office in CT I think it's in Norwalk. it wasn't too bad and you can get the passport that day if you're traveling soon
