I have to renew my passport so I can go on my HM. But that would mean I have to pay the renewal fee and then when I get back pay another fee to have a new passport with my new last name? Is this what everyone else did?
If you need a passport to go on your HM you need to renew it with your maiden name on it - all your travel docs should be in your maiden name. When you get back, you can change in to your married name.
You have up to one year to get an updated passport with your name change for no additional fee. I just did it and had the exact same question and that's what the post office told me. (To be honest, I don't remember if it's a year from the time you get your passport issued or a year from the date your name is changed. I'm pretty sure it was a year from when the passport is first issued to you.) I'm getting mine only a few weeks before my wedding so I didn't really pay attention to when the year starts.
If you make any changes to your passport within a year of renewing it, you don't have to pay again.
