Passport renewal- what would you do? UPDATE*******
My lazy @ss didnt renew my passport over the summer when i should have.
now its due to expire march 17. and im traveling on my bachelorette party on march 26.
im going to priority mail it in today so it will get there tuesday. Should I pay the extra cash to expedite it or do you think that I'll get it back in time the regular service? the post office lady said i should get it by the beginning of march.
TIA
***********UPDATE************ i took your ladies 'better safe than sorry' advice and wrote out a check for a whopping $135 for expedited service.
i told the guy at the post office when i was traveling and that it was expedited. and HE LAUGHED AT ME!! He said 'i sense a touch of paranoia here'. and he made me go write out a new check to do regular service. he said that i can renew it three times between now and the end of march. i told him if it doesnt come in on time, i know where he works.... lets wait and see!

you can fill out the application online, print it out and mail it in with your old passport and a check for the fee. HTH

Re: Passport renewal- what would you do?
I just applied for a new passport on Jan 9th and they just sent me an email that its in the mail and i should get it by Feb 3rd. I think you have plenty of time for reg service. Thier web site is saying 4-6 weeks but mine took less then 3.

Re: Passport renewal- what would you do?
if they're saying it will DEFINITELY be at your door by March 1st, then i'd just go with that ... but if it's a 'probably' thing, then i'd expedite.

Re: Passport renewal- what would you do?
Just FYI, my fiancee and I were going on a cruise in May 2007, and when we sent away for his passport it took way longer than it should have (with regular service) and it wound up coming WHILE we were away on the cruise. It was right before they changed some of the requirements, so if he needed it like we thought he would we would have had a really hard time. I would expedite it just because you're taking a chance that if something gets delayed you might not get it in time.

When I renewed my passport I received it in less than two weeks regular mail. You should have no problem getting it back in time.

I just sent away for my new one two weeks ago -- they've already deposited my check. The site says 4-6 weeks but the person at the post office told me the same thing about it coming faster.
Kinda stinks you're renewing now and will have to send it back in (with new pictures, btw!) in just a few months if you're changing your name!!!
At least your fee will be less to change name on it since yours is going to be less than a year old when you do. Mine I had to basically pay for a new passport even though I had another year left on mine.
