Past Brides: Name Change

Past Brides: Name Change

Hi,

I am keeping my last name but was wondering if it would be difficult later on. Such as future children, taxes, people assuming you are Mrs. HisLastName, traveling and booking things etc. Any girls regret keeping your maiden name? If yes what are the annoyances you have now.

For tax purposes, are married couples better off filling jointly or married filing separate?

Any input is appreciated!!

hi. i did NOT keep my maiden name but as for tax concerns, i would suggest talking to your accountant and see what's fit for your situation.

in my case, we were better off filing separately the 1st year we got married. this year we will be filing joint.

this usually is the case! i think it deepens what time of year you get married as well. definitely speak to your accountant.

people assuming that you have taken his last name will always be an issue!! I dont think you can help that one....

Actually, the only person that addresses me by his name is his mother in order to pi$$ me off.

I didnt change it and honestly, it is pretty common these days....especially on the coasts. Haven't addressed taxes yet....but it was no problem putting me on his health insurance, etc.they don't care whatyour name is.....they need your SSN anyway!

i plan on changing my name. i want to have the same last name as my future children. i think it will be annoying and i don't know how i'll handle degrees in my maiden name, etc. but i think for the kids reason alone i'm going to change it. that being said, i know couples who aren't going that route and are planning on having families too. good luck with your choice!

it all depends on your finanical situation for joint vs. seperate, but most benefit from joint deductions.

im taking my FH's name, however I still think about what to do at work... everyone knows me by my name so it will be a weird adjustment

*edited because i miss read the tax question

i can't help with the tax question but i had a lot of trouble with the name change situation.. i just recently got my doctorate in my maiden name and so all my work experience, degrees, and dissertation are in my maiden name... i wanted to have the same name as my DH so i put my maiden name as my second middle name so legally I can put both names on things in which i need my name recognition but don't have to sign both names every time i need to sign somthing.

ETA right before changing my name i ordered a new license saying i lost mine so i have a state issued id with my maiden name as well as a license in my new name

Thanks for sharing Ladies, I'd rather get the inside scoop now before changing anything. I will def talk to an acct. I want to see where we stand in both scenarios.

Good thing is both FH and FMIL are ok with either decision. Sorry you have to deal with that, that would annoy me too. Thanks for the post, I think it's a great topic that LIW should talk more about so we are all educated.

DH is totally fine with it! And you don't have to change your name to file taxes jointly. We need to speak with our accountant on how best to file
