Most people say the avg. is about $100 per person. You'll have some people that will be extremely generous, and some who won't even give a card - you just never know.

Difficult to say. From regular guests (not family) gifts ranged from $0 (quite a few) to $500.

difficult to say. Ours ranged from 0-$1500. Talk about a huge difference!
The majority was $250-$350.

$0 (more than half) - $750 (one family) The 'common' amounts were $100 per envelope...not person, not family...and even still we were pleasantly surprised and grateful for it all. My advice to you is to expect nothing so that whatever you get is appreciated.

Not a past bride, but from what I have heard, if you are counting on envelopes at the wedding to cover any of the costs or tips for the day of - DON'T!
If you're asking out of idle curiousity, expect nothing and be happy by the people that surprise you with their generosity.

Well, I went in with the idea not to expect anything from anyone. But there were quite a few family members that were not in a position to give money. Some were even thinking of not coming becuase they knew they wouldnt be able to give a gift. I insisted they come because as much as anyone likes money, its more important to have your loved ones surrounding you on your wedding day. I think I was more upset with the people that rsvp'ed and didnt show up.

Wow, I can't believe people in this day and age would still give nothing at a wedding. Thank God 95% of the people we have coming have either been married recently, are getting married, or know proper etiquette!!!
There are some people we are not expecting much from, but $0?? Wow.

Agreed. I suppose we got about $100 per person but the range was so widespread that I can't even say for sure.

I agree that $100 per person is a good number to expect.

I asked because I am more so wondering if my gifts are cheap! I used to give between 200-250.
I am going to a wedding in DC in a couple of weeks, and was thinking of giving 250. Wanted to get an idea of what people give

Spoken like a true Diva! That's the way to do it, you'll be dissapointed any other way, and besides, it's NOT about the gifts. If it is, priorities need to be re-arranged.
I just crunched some numbers and divided the total amount received vs. the total number of guests that attended (not including my lovely no-shows ) and my total was $55. Yup, $55 per person. There you go.

My average was 163.00 pp. The biggest gift I got was $3000. The smallest was $50. And my Dad's cousins gave my savings bonds. What's up with that????? I can't even cash them.

Re: Past Brides: What was the average amount of money
My average was 90pp that's including kids etc..but people gave us gifts that didn't attend. This was merely the number from the people that attended.
ETA: I just want to point out that it will always shock and amaze you who gives what and if they give nothing. Don't expect that people will give you what you give them, it's about what you can afford. Also, if people recently got married and you think they will give you the right amount, don't even count on it. Everyone has their own financial situation and ideas about what to give..expect nothing and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Past Brides: What was the average amount of money
I think it depends on the venue. If it is a 'cheaper' venue, the standard person would probably give $100. If it is a pricer place, $200.
I'm going to expect $100 per person even if I know I'll spend much more per person.
