Re: Paying for our wedding

Keep everything in perspective. This is an important day but its NOT the most important day of your life. You want to have a memorable celebration surrounded with family and friends but is it work it to spend a rediculous amount of money and put your new marriage in debt. Shop around abd make informed decisions. There are many reception halls and vendors who are reasonably priced and do great work. Dont get caught up in this whole site. Meaning, some brides on here are spending major bucks - dont feel like you wedding wont be up to par because of what others are doing. Your wedding will be amazingly perfect for you and your FI.

Few tips

- only invite people you and FH really care about (close friends and family)
- Bargain for everything (vendors)
- do plenty of research here
- Set a budget and stick to it. Plan according to your budget. i.e. don't pick the most expensive place. Always keep your budget in mind
- write a detail budget (for each category) like dress, hair/make-up, tux, HM, reception hall, flowers, photographers, etc.
- be creative and open minded

Good luck!

So far I am within $500 of my budget.

Re: Paying for our wedding

we paid for most of our wedding ourselves and here is how we saved...

1. we had a very small wedding. only close friends family. no 2nd cousin twice removed, etc.
2. we picked an inexpensive venue that was beautiful. I still can't believe what an amazing wedding we had for the price that we paid!
3. we took a Caribeban HM, we didn't splurge on Hawaii or Fiji
4. I did a LOT of research and found a reasonable photographer who is amazingly talented! even if we had $10K to spend on photos, we would still have hired who we did!!
5. we ordered invites online for $200! and got SO many compliments. no need to spend $1K++

an inexpensive LI wedding? yes, it can be done!

the best way to keep the price down is by keeping it small (100 guest) and choosing an day and time that is less popular. Afternoons, Sundays and Late fall through early spring are cheapest.

ING Direct! You can build some SERIOUS interest from now until then. And you get $25 for opening an account! (FM me for the link). Just keep feeding money into that account and you can make 4% interest! So, if you put $10,000 in an account, you'll make 400 more bucks in a year... that can pay for your invitations!

Also, if you have to cut corners, do it on something that isn't forever. Don't cut back on photography or videography since that's the stuff you'll have forever.

The way we are saving money for our wedding is my FH is moving in to my house (i live at home with my parents still) we are car pooling to work. we paid off any out standing bills or loans. And im trying not to use my Credit cards. My wedding is not till next May we got engaged in Feb and about 2 weeks or so we started booking things. We thought of us it was better to did a package deal with the limos video and photo invitions. We booked the dj. We want to have the wedding pretty much paid before it happens so we arent stressing over the $$... Good Luck. It sure aint easy out there.

So funny I was jsut going to suggest the same thing, except we used Capital ONe. Although I hear that HSBC has the best rates right now. its worth checking it out.

We decided what was most important and skipped other things, like we're not having limos and we're programming the music oursleves and just hired an 'MC'. We picked the least expensive nice hall we could find, even though we wanted it at a different place originally. The hall saved us so much we were able to add a few extras we didn't think we'd originally be able to have and we kept it under 100 people. We also picked a Sunday. I also worked extra overtime.

Re: Paying for our wedding

FH and I are paying for own wedding as well and it can be done cheaply...

Here's how we did:
1. Get married in the off season. I am having a saturday wedding in February... I am saving more than 100% than other halls in the area because I am not getting married anytime between April and OCtober (the most expensice months.) Also, getting married in the AFTERNOON...I hate the cold, but the money we save will make it well worth it.

2. We booked an inexpensive hall.... we love it and are paying way LESS than most other more 'popular' halls on the Island.

3. Getting married in February also had other perks:
our band is playing for us for 50% off and our photo/video guy threw in the video for FREE!

4. Inivitations online

5. Doing our own programs, etc.

6. Utilizing friends and family for the music at the ceremony and other things (bagpiper, calligrapher) You'd be surprised at the talents your friends and family would love to contribute to your wedding... plus it makes it much more meaningful.

7. Not doing centerpieces (yes, our hall provides small ones) but we are not doing anything extra. Cutting that out saved us at least 1K.

We started putting $100 from ever paycheck ($200 per month) each into a high interest account as soon as we moved in together. Also, any 'extra' money went in there (refunds, etc). 8 months later we got engaged and had over $4k to start with.

Check EmigrantDirect.com They have great rates and we earn about $20 per month interest now too!

Good luck!

Keep the guest list down. We're doing a Sunday brunch which cut the price down dramatically. We're also not doing flower centerpieces. I got nice candle ones on E-bay. We're also doing our own music via Itunes and our laptop.

FH and I keep a shoe box that I wrapped in pretty wedding paper and each week we put $20 bucks each in it.. if we have more, we put in more.. it really adds up!!!

To save money, look for an afternoon. Even late April which can be beatuiful is cheaper than June. Skip the MC that goes with the DJ. Don't get parent albums from the photographer. Only have 1 limo, not a entourage. Skip out on the Rolls Royce you'll only be in for 30 minutes out of the 3 hours.

Re: Paying for our wedding

We are lucky to have some help from our parents, but FH and I are paying for a big chunk of it too. My advice:
Decide on a few things that are really important to you and FH and budget accordingly in order to get those things. In addition to your regular savings, start putting little amounts of money away...it adds up soooo fast. FH and I put all of our change in a jar and singles at the end of the day. In a month or so we had $100. It's not a lot in the grand scheme of things but it pays for something!

Make a budget and stick with it. Determine a goal each month with how much you want to earmark for the wedding. It's almost become a game for us...trying to reach our goal and figuring out how we can do it. It ***** to not be spending money on things we normally do (new spring clothes ) but I try to keep it in perspective and think about how beautiful our big day will be!

Good luck...on a positive note...if you are tying the knot in 2008 you have lots of time!

Re: Paying for our wedding

Shop around. Our reception hall is very reasonable and we had such an amazing day!!! I would not have traded that decision for the world. Also, I found my dress at one place, then paid less than 10% of that cost at another place. (Not 10% off, but less than 10% of the cost)

Figure out what's important to you and set priorities. For instance, if photography is important to you, then maybe you can tone down another part of your budget.

Get ideas from ladies here.

Re: Paying for our wedding

We are doing everything ourselves too and only have an extremely small budget. We had our hearts set on a summer wedding, so we went with an outdoor venue and found a park for only $225!!! They supply tables and chairs and the site has a pavillion with rain guards in case of bad weather. That, I think was our best investment!

Otherwise, we are relying heavily on contributions from friends and family. My parents are florists, so they are doing the flowers, and a friend is buying, cooking and transporting the pig for our rpig roast, the DJ, photographer, hair and makeup are all being done by friends at discounted rates or for free.

The only thing we are disappointed about is we may not be able to afford limos and cannot have a full bar, so we chose to go with beer, wine and soda... liquor gets expensive too!

Now is the time to call in any favors! Good Luck!

Re: Paying for our wedding

You've got some great advice going on here! Let me add some of the things I have done/in the process of myself.
#1 - I booked my hall in Feb after I placed a question on the vendor board that stated my price and I got tons of responses, and one of them was my dream hall - BOOKED IT!
#2- check out in home florists, I love love love Laurie from LA Blossoms, she is so wonderful to deal with! I decided to do my own centerpieces and have her do my bouquets and boutineers, she was so understanding and awesome about it! I know another bride on here is using Stop and Shop as well, something to look into.
#3 We are ordering our invitations online, make sure you request lots of sample (free) invites. I wouldn't spend a dime on a sample and I found lots of free ones.
#4 Check out the threads on dollar sections, you can find faboulous things for your bridal party there
#5 Don't bother w/ favors for your guests, they don't keep them anyway, we are going the donation route and baking dog bone shaped sugar cookies w/ a note in it
#6 - Michaels, AC Moore - you can find tons of items here at discount, plus lots of coupons online. You can even buy your invites there and print them yourself - I just didn't have the patience.
#7 - We aren't doing Limo's - we talked about it and decided they weren't necessary for us and not something we think we will miss.
#8 - check out the work done by 12th night photography, they don't push you into signing a contract that includes albums so you can worry about that later and their work is great! I know there is another photography company that works that way too but I am not 100% positive about their name.
#9 Remember that it is 1 day and you have time to save for it, plenty of time in fact. I love Dayna (sugarkube's) idea of the shoebox, anything you can do to save $ is going to help you.
#10 Don't get stuck in the bridal websites for everything, I bought my shoes for the day of from Charlotte Russe for 17.99, others have purchased from Fredricks - hit the sales and the outlets - if you don't second guess yourself and know it's perfect and the price is right then go for it!
#11 - inexpensive DIY projects will make your day so personal and will add that extra flair.
#12 - you will be surprised at what you don't have to do and that no one will ever notice.
Please FM me if you want to - I have tons of ideas!
It's all about being realistic and getting what you can done in little doses. Don't feel like you have to book everything and get it all done right now! You have time to do your research and source out things that are w/in your budget. Your first thing to do is budget out what you can and decide on the things that are most important to you. For me it was my hall and my dress - and my FH
Good luck!
