also check out www.americanpearl.com. it provides some simple info on grade, color, tone, etc.

During my undergrad I sold jewelry for 4 years in an upscale store. I know a bit about pearls, but it depends on what kind you want (and what you want to spend). Freshwater or cultured? I can just tell you that with either you'll want to look for luster, a thick nacre (outer shell) and even color. If you want to know more, or about pricing, let me know.
