Pen pal spinoff ...

Pen pal spinoff ...

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago ... when I was say 12 or so, I had two pen pals (one freak from Regina, Saskatchewan and one from West Bradford, England) ...

But anyway, I got them out of a MAGAZINE. Do any of my fellow ANCIENT people remember when Tiger Beat & the like had addresses of people who wanted to be pen pals? Like say there was a list of adresses for General Hospital fans, etc ...

The girl from England was a crazy Dynasty fan and she would ask me to make AUDIO TAPES (yes, before we had a VCR ... well, before anyone did ... we were not *rich* enough to have a BETAMAX) episodes with my 13' bedroom TV in a closet with a tape recorder pushed up against it. Which was even odder because the episodes showing in the UK were a year or two behind so I can't fathom why she wanted these.

I don't really remember how I got hooked up with the girl from Canada but she was weird and trampy based on her stories (half the time I had no clue what she was talking about) and the picture she sent me of her in a t-shirt & undies

I do remember those! Never did it but I do remember it- does that mean I am ancient too?

Wow, I remember that... that's funny! Yeah same thing for me...one from New Zealand and one from Wales. I was 'closer' to the one from Wales and she used to send me pictures of Duran Duran and Paul Young!!

My cousin used to work for Super Teen and she put my 'penpal ad' in for me one month... I can't tell you how many penpals I had growing up! I must have recieved over 100 from that ad alone!!

Pen Pals. I had one that they organized thru school and many from Montana or Canada probably in 5-8th grade that I must have gotten from some magazine. It was fun sending pictures and chatting. I had one too that was all slutty but couldn't tell if she made it up or not. I also had one who sent me audio tapes of herself saying weird stuff or singing - lol. I met the one who sent the tapes once - we actually played against each other in a soccer tournament since we were both from Queens.

The one through school, I had a pen pal in Tasmania! I even remember his name Bruce Lawson.

When I was in 3rd grade, my class had bottles with letters in them thrown in the water near the coast of England by a classmates uncle, who was a ship's captain. Some of my classmates received responses during that year. TWO years later, in 5th grade, my 3rd grade teacher called me to say they had gotten a response to my letter. It was from an 8 year old boy who lived in London, but had a cottage in Dorset, which is by the water. We kept in touch for awhile..i wasn't big on writing letters in those days. I was also featured in the local Staten Island Newspaper with my 3rd grade teacher! I sometimes wonder what my penpal is up to these days.

I just remembered about a *penpal* I had as an adult ... probably 14 years ago ... a coworker of mine had a really easy phone # and these drunk guys celebrating some soccer victory in Austrailia called him by chance ... well, he gave them MY PHONE NUMBER to be funny!

Pretty interesting call trying to figure out what the heck was going on ... but I ended up writing to this guy back & forth for a while. I think he visited family in the Midwest at some point and wanted to meet up ...

DAMN I CAN'T REMEMBER HIS NAME ... (I think it was Travis?)

I remember those days. I remember the summer I was 11, I was bored & reading through an Archie comic book. I sent my name in & was added to the penpal page. I received about 10-15 letters a day for about a month. I read all of them, but only wrote to the kids close in age and that I had things in common with.

Funniest part is I wrote to a girl in Texas, the same age as me and to this day we write, talk on the phone, email and visit. I was maid of honor in her wedding and godmother to one of her children. We stayed in touch for years ONLY through letters and later on calls. Then when I graduated HS, I asked to go down to her small town. We were featured in the local paper there. Since then she's been up here a number of time & I try to go down at least once a year.

My school had a program where we sent our names in to this company and they matched us up with people.

My one penpal was from England (also a big Paul Young fan). We corresponded for a bit, and then she stopped. I had arranged for my best friend to be a penpal with this girl's cousin in England. I found out from her later that my penpal got pregnant and had twins at 16! I guess there were a lot of complications.

I also had a penpal from Australia for a while. And I also got a very odd letter from a guy in Egypt. He sent me his photo and all these love poems.

I had a pen pal from a magazine but it was a children's magazine. We wrote to each other for about 12 years. She is from Washington State.

I actually have a nice pen-pal story...
When I was 9 years old, I got a pen-pal from Germany. Believe it or not, we kept in touch through all these years.
For the first time last year, we met!!! She came to New York for a holiday & we got to spend some time together. It was really cool to meet her after almost 20 years of corresponding to each other through letters!

The best news...She's flying in on Saturday to attend my Wedding!!!
