My dh and I are moving to Scotch Plains in Union County NJ next month. I really like what I have seen of the area and the commute is great.
We were looking in LI, but the prices were better in NJ.

Scotch Plains is nice but it's a little too far from the train for us. We really like the area we're in now- just need something a little bigger. Congrats- its a great area!

Re: Personal Question Regarding Income...
Sage There was an article in Money magazine that Scoth Plains was one of the most undervalued communities in the country. For the price that you pay for property it is a great community. The schools are also rated 9.5 out of 10!!!

Top 10 undervalued towns Plus: Wedded to fix-ups, high-cost state By Steve Kerch, CBS.MarketWatch.com Last Update: 12:03 AM ET Feb. 28, 2003
WORCESTER, Mass. (CBS.MW) -- Housing prices are rising fast, especially in the most desirable cities. But within each metropolitan region can be hidden bargains that offer all the good qualities of an area without the high prices.
CBS MARKETWATCH PERSONAL FINANCE
'Undervalued towns are towns with many premium-qualities -- like good public schools, low crime rates, and educated neighbors -- but where median home prices are surprisingly low compared to other area towns,' says Andrew Schiller, president of Location Inc.
Schiller, a geographer, has studied America's 61,000 census tracks using data from the Census Bureau, Department of Education, Federal Housing Authority and FBI to create NeighborhoodScout, a neighborhood-matching database. From his analysis, he derived the top undervalued towns in the country's 10 biggest metropolitan areas. They are:
Scotch Plains, N.J. (New York) Simi Valley, Calif. (Los Angeles) Mundelein, Ill. (Chicago) Silver Spring, Md. (Washington, D.C.) Dublin, Calif. (San Francisco) Havertown, Penn. (Philadelphia) Sharon, Mass. (Boston) Lathrup Village, Mich. (Detroit) Colleyville, Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth) Sugar Land, Texas (Houston) 'People want good places for their families, but prices can be prohibitive. Using these simple criteria, I discovered great options for real people right in the metro areas in which many Americans live and work,' Schiller said. All of the undervalued picks are within 40 miles of the center city.
The family that rehabs together
Contrary to popular wisdom, more couples find working together on a home fix-up project to be a positive experience for a marriage rather than a prelude to divorce.
Fifty-four percent of U.S. couples say the enjoy working with each other on home-improvement projects, and that proving they could work together was a key point of satisfaction in doing the job, according to a survey from hand-tool maker Great Neck Saw Manufacturers.
'Believe it or not, 9 percent say fixing up their homes together is a romantic experience,' said Steve Maltese, director of marketing for Great Neck. 'Only 6 percent say that they fight like cats and dogs.' And seven percent said they would never attempt a joint renovation again.
'We gave them a chance to vent and talk about their biggest complaint when working together, and it turns out that 41 percent say that they have no complaints,' he said. 'But it's not all rosy. Of those who were dissatisfied, 20 percent think that their partner can be too bossy and 16 percent complain that their partner is too much of a perfectionist.'
High-priced state
Far from collapsing, the luxury-home market in California performed remarkably well in 2002, with prices for houses valued at $1 million or more rising 3 percent overall, according to an index that tracks prices.
All three of the state's top markets showed increases, including San Francisco, where prices of million-dollar homes rose 3.6 percent for all of 2002 despite showing a slight decline in the fourth quarter, First Republic Bank said. The average sales price of those houses was $2.23 million.
Upscale-home prices in Los Angeles rose 3.6 percent as well, reaching their highest point in a decade, $1.34 million. And San Diego saw a 3.3 percent increase, enough to push the luxury-home average to $1.45 million, the highest in the 17 years the bank has kept track.
'Luxury-home values in California held their own in 2002 in spite of continuing economic uncertainty,' said Katherine August-deWilde, chief operating officer of First Republic Bank. (FRC: news, chart, profile)
'Because of the unknown nature of world events, we remain cautious about values in 2003, but we see no significant signs of a decline in values in metropolitan Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco,' she said.

Re: Personal Question Regarding Income...
The made a mistake here.
Silver Spring, Md. (Washington, D.C.)
Silver Spring MD is expensive. My sister lives there and you are lucky if you find a townhouse for 300k and you have to sell one of your kidneys to get a single family. The taxes are also very expensive in that part of MD.
She loves it b/c she has school age kids and the schools are excellent in that area.
She also loves it b/c the area has a lot of diversity and she likes that for the kids as well.
