Personal question- was/is anyone on an anti-depressant while ttc or while PG?
I'm on an anti-depressant and was wondering how far in advance of ttc I should go off it. Also, there's an article in the NYTimes today about women who become PG while on an anti-depressant and then go off it, but relapse into a major depression and it scares me! I can address these issues with my psychiatrist, but wanted to get your opinions also.

I am also on an antidepressent--- due to anxiety -- My Dr.s have told me I can safely take it thru my next pregnancy. I was on one prior to my last baby-- weened off before I got pregnant-- was not on ANY meds durng pregnancy... did wonderful during preganancy-- thought my anxiety was cured! Then a day after the baby was born -- BOOM... I was a mess. I had to get rushed to the ER-- I had such bad panic attacks.. The Dr. called it post partum anxiety. I stayed off meds for a while and tried to do it myself -- but I finally had to go back on a low dose of antidepressent. I feel wonderful now -- and to prevent a relapse -- the Drs-- ( both OBGYN, and Pysc) think it is OK to take during pregnancy . They say the benefit outweighs the risk .. thats what you have to look at .. There is with any drug a ' risk ' ... but do you need to take it -- In my case I do ... I took a course on psychological drugs...and just a FYI...depending on what category it is...you should not take it - BUT if you get PG while on it...going cold turkey could cause a miscarriage...
there are some antidepressants that are ok for pg - I would check with your dr...

My girl friend was on Anti-depressants her whole preganacy and had a beautiful baby!!!

definitely check with your doctor...I know that paxil...prozac...and zoloft are Category Cs...which means that there have not been successful studies to determine if it is safe...
your doctor may switch you to a category b or (I think D - like elle says...the benefits outweigh the risk)

From the research I have done -- several tests have been done on the drug Prozac -- It has been around for a long time. They have found no signifigant problems with this drug and pregnancy. They have followed mothers and babies up until the kids were like age 10 or 11 -- and still found no more than the normal problems that would have happened without taking it . I dont think any other AD's have been tested so well. I have heard of alot of Dr's switching patients to Prozac due to the findings... But again -- this is just what I have heard -- and not medical by anymeans... Please speak with your Dr and make the best decision based on your situation...
**Sidenote**--I was told that the same is NOT true for many anxiety medications called - Benzodizapines.(sp??) Such as Ativan , Zanax, Valium .... They have been shown to cause miscarriages and problems in birth. Those you may want to avoid...

I was just watching CNN this morning (wed) and they said they are doing a segment on this today, if anyone is interested. They started off by saying the two (anti depressants and pregnancy) dont mix.... Just thought I would let you know if you would like to watch.
