personality online and in person - same or different?
I'm totally different online than I am in person - but ONLY with people I don't really know. In person, it takes me a very long time to trust people and be comfortable enough with them to just be myself. I have this problem at work - even though I've been here a few years - I can't seem to totally trust the people I work with and it really alters my personality while I'm at my job, so when I'm here, I'm very quiet, keep to myself, and only have a small group of people that I'm really comfrtable with. BUT - once I log on here - it's like just a big ol group of pals that I can talk freely with, and it's really nice :) Around my friends and family - I am hyper, energetic, and LOUD! :) It's funny how I seem to have two diffrent personalities, depending on what situation I'm in. Does anyone else find themself doing this as well? I might just be a wierdo too

I think I'm pretty much the same person on and off line. I know a lot of people who are completely different when they are online than in person - not always in a good way.

At first I am shy in person... once I feel comfortable in the situation, I warm up.

Totally on the same page.
The one thing that really makes me feel comfortable with people is when they can understand and they like my sense of humor.
My FW laughed at the first joke I ever told.. and I knew we were on the same level there.
If I bomb at a first joke, the shy level goes waaaaaaay UP!
Here-- I can bomb all I want.. LOL .. and can try again over and over. It's not like that when you are in person for the first time especially. I remember talking to girls in bars and telliing what I thught were hysterical jokes and just getting stares like I had three heads on my shoulders.
I would go over and tell the guys and they would be rolling over laughing.
Either there is a fundamental difference between male and female sense of humor (and I think that there is and that there isn;t.. gray area to be exact).. and probably back in those old single days.. I was trying too hard.
I have gone off on several tangents. LOL
THe answer -- different.

OctGroom - you are funny! But to trail off from one of your tangents - I think EMBARASSMENT is a huge factor in how comfortable you are being yourself around people you don't know. I always feel like that in situation with new people - like it's a test, and you're just waiting to see if you've passed the 'you are cool' test, or if you fail miserably at it.... Looking back, I can't begin to tell you guys how many times must have made a fool of myself doing/saying something I thought was a real hoot! oh well, it adds character!

I think I am definitely more shy in person (at least with people I don't know). And honestly, I probably feel more comfortable expressing differing opinions online than to someone's face. I actually took most of the classes for my Master's online because of this--normally I would be the person, quiet in the back of the classroom, whereas online I was always very active in discussions Now if only I could telecommute...

Thanks!.. and I think you hit the nail on the head exactly. There's like a test that we all have to pass.. and a test we run ourselves subconsciously.. in meeting new people.
I don't think I will ever be 100% confident in myself. People can probably sense this.
I may get up to 80.. 90.. 95... but I always have a little doubt.
BUT. the FW makes me feel like I do.. and she feels 100% confident in me.. so whatever doubts exist in my mind.. I can't let her down. I gotta do it for us in spite of them.

I am much more forthcoming in real life.
Ive seen way to much weird s#$% go down on line to let people know personal info about myself. Sometimes I wish I could be more open here but like I said I have my reservations.

I think I'm pretty much myself here. I may actually be more careful in word choice, so as not to offend anyone, where I would be a bit more brutally honest with one of my close friends. It's not that I don't share my opinions honestly, because I feel I do, I'm just more conscious of how I come across.

I think i am similar and different...But in reality i think that as much as we like to say that we are the same...it just isn't true.. I know and have met people online and some were exactly the same (dm24angel you are exactly the same in person as you are online ) and some that are so completely different from their personalities online!
So who knows

I am pretty much the same - it takes me a while to warm up (ie..it took me two years to reach 1000 posts) and then you can't shut me up (10000 since then..LOL).

LOL! Ya think?? Well I cant 'hide' my personality too much...I'm respectful yet loud and a little crazy, so it comes across no matter if its in person or not...I think people are ultimetly the same, but when you see them in person, they may be shy, but underneath they are the same as online SO...its circumstance not different personalities or anything

Re: personality online and in person - same or different?
I think I'm a lot shyer in person...on here, if I start to write something stupid, I can always hit DELETE! In real life, you can't take back what you say....and i know so many times I have said things thinking they were funny and people have just looked embarrassed for me....so I keep my mouth shut until I know that the person I am speaking with won't criticise or judge me. Silence is GOLDEN.... the only problem is, I put so much pressure on myself to not say anything stupid, that I don't say anything at all, and the more I force myself to not act shy, the more I clam up!
