Thank you for all the comments on this. FI talked to FFIL and he apologized whole-heartedly and I accepted his apology. We're def keeping her until her life expires...and we hope to spend many more years with her.
Thanks again.

NO there is no reason why you should have to get rid of an animal-- where would the poor thing go? that's your pet and you wouldn't be a responsible pet owner to just abandon the cat over something like an allergy that millions of people have...
there has to be ways around it. now i know for sure that people are not allergic to cat's FUR, they are allergic to the protein that is in the cats saliva, so the more fur the cat has the more it licks itself so the more the person has a reaction.
you could try something my mother does with her cats: she takes them to a groomer that basically bathes them and shaves them down, they leave the hair around their head and paws-- believe it or not, the cats LOVE it, no more constant licking and grooming, no more hairballs, and they are SO much more comfortable in the summer. They are so happy when they get their cuts-- they go about once every three months... the guy that owns the place is great, it's called 'clean as a whisker' and it's in ronkonkoma.
now, other than that: you can speak to your vet about options for your FFIL (pills, shots and meds that help ease the allergy)... combine that with the cat getting a short haircut and he should be fine. i mean, he's not living with you-- just visiting. try that out and see what happens. the haircut is a good idea either way--no more shedding, no more cleaning the furniture
but stand your ground-- you should never have to give up your pet!!

Since he's allergic he probably doesn't realize how much your pet means to you. I would say don't even entertain the thought of getting rid of your cat and suggest he take allergy pills or something the few times he comes to visit. Just keep up on the cleaning and keep the cat in your bedroom when he comes. Unless he's living with you why should you get rid of your cat for him???

This is not easy. But If it was me I would not get rid of my cat. Maybe he can deal with it for short periods of time if the cat is in the other room. Maybe allergie pills might help. But I would not give up a pet for someone who might visit.

My cats are like my children so I can't give you an unbiased answer. I wouldn't give up my cats for my parents, never mind my FIL's.
Tell him to pop a Benedryl before he comes over. There is no reason for you to give up your pets just so his vists are more comfortable. I could understand it if you were moving into his house but I am guessing that's not the case. Have FH explain to him how much your cat means to you and that there is no chance of you giving him/her up.

No, absolutely not. I wouldn't get rid of my pets for anybody.
It irritates me when people don't understand that having a pet is for LIFE, not just until it's inconvenient. I think maybe somebody needs to explain that to your FFIL.
I have 3 cats in the house, and several friends who are allergic. They know the deal, they know they can't hang out here for long periods of time, and that's fine. We'll just meet up somewhere else if we're going to be hanging out for a long time.
He really has no right to ask you to get rid of your cat just so he can occasionally visit.
Give that up!!!! NOT EVEN UP FOR DISCUSSION!!!! Such a cutie

why would you, is your FFIL going to live with you or something? That seems like an odd question.

It's not that FFIL/FMIL are going to live with us. He just wants to be able to visit...without the fear of allergic reactions....and he does have severe reactions... Thanks for asking thouhg.

no dont give her up.. thats so unfair that he's actually asking you to do that. there are so many ways to work around it such as pills or maybe if they plan to come over you may want to arrange having someone babysit her for a couple of hours until they leave, or maybe leave her in your room while they're in your house cheer up .

I wouldn't give up my cat for infrequent visits, or for visits of ANY kind. Is he outta his mind. Ballsy if you ask me. Keep your cat!! And I agree with Chrissy, either have him take an allergy pill, or just meet him someplace to eat or something.

exactly, well said!!! having a pet is a big deal, you can't just get one and then get rid of one as life gets harder or things pop up! how could he ask that of you? i could see if you were moving IN with him into HIS house-- but not this way.
CUTE PIC BTW!!!!!

I have had a cat and my grandma, sister & friends have been allergic....They deal with it ok - I also used to put my cat in the bedroom when they would come over so there was no direct contact!!

I wouldn't do anything. It's your pet, you're attached to it you can't just 'get rid' of it! You're just gonna have to go and visit him! XOXOXO Kitty
