can anyone tell me their package prices and what you are getting for your money?
Also why is it a lot of photo/video places want so much money upfront?

You have to remember that after the catering hall, the next most important (and most expensive) aspect of your wedding is the photography.
I don't know about everyone else, but our deposit with the photographer was the same as our catering hall, $500. I would rather leave a larger deposit now than have to shell out more money a month before the wedding!!
I don't have a package per se, we are paying $2800 total for the entire day, with a guarantee of at least 900-1000 proofs and no albums. This is mostly black and white film with color digital.
Most of the packages I saw at other photography places charged anywhere from $1800 - $4000 for a basic package with and without albums. Expect to see $3000 - $6500 for the best packages.
