Ok heres our new situation... My cousin who owns a small photgraphy business on the side has offered to do our wedding pics for free (which is very nice of him). I have seen some of his work and it is beautiful. He worked for a well known photography studio while in college and never really ventured from it once he got his job with Bloomberg TV (he's a camerman).
I'm just nervous that he may not have enough experience with photography to let him do them. Although I don't think he would have offered if he didn't feel confident enough in his work...
The other thing is that since we're on a budget...we don't want to spend a ton of money on pictures...and for what we have budgeted for photos it doesn't look like we'll get good quality or a good package...
Of course we'll sit with my cousin and look at his work more closely...but my question is would you go for it knowing that if he doesn't get it right the first time there is no second time...or would you make your photography budget a bit bigger to get pictures you want...even though you really can't afford to make it bigger?????

Well. This is a big question. My FH cousin does videography and is going to do it for our wedding, however my FH (and Im suprised cause he can be a big budgeter) said that I should get someone else. It's good to have family to do these things for you. But this can cause issues and u dont want that. I think you should get a photographer and let your cousin do the photography on the side for his portfolio.

I think you should make your decision based on his work and the meeting you have with him. If you are not comfortable with his work, then I suggest you look for someone else and graciously decline. It's a tough situation.

That is a dilemma, and really nice of him. I'm sure your cousin would take it very seriously, and you can sit with him and give him an idea of pics he must take, what you don't like/like, etc. Since he worked for a studio, I'm sure he knows how to handle weddings. If you don't want the added expense, I say go for it.
Even a 'professional' wedding photographer can screw up your pics. A friend of mine's photog lost a roll of film that had her cake cutting and dance w/ her Dad on it....

I would be nervous because since he is family you dont want to mess with that relationship and don't you want him to be able to be a guest and enjoy himself at the wedding? If you are worried about money there are ways to still get great photgraphy. When I looked at photgraphers I decided I was going to make my own album and asked them for prices for just the proofs and the negatives (or digital files) The price ranges that I got for that service were $1000-$2000. Most photgs charge anywhere from $500 to $1000 for just the bottom of the line photo album...If I was able to afford that I would get them...but I can't and I know I can use my own skills to make just as nice of a album...
hope this helps!! :)

FH told him that he doesn't want him working at our wedding that he wants him to enjoy it. He responded by saying that he's going to have his camera regrdless...
He also said to find a photographer if I don't want to use him and just get the neagtives from him...my cousin said he'll develop them...I'm just not sure how easy it would be to find a photographer willing to do this...don't they make most of their money from assembling the packages???

he is going to have his camera reguardless but he isnt going to be missing the entire cocktail hour taking formal portraits with the stress of setting everyone up...
all the photogs I went to offered that as an option... they are still making decent money for the day... the photgrapher that i went with was $1500 for the day for all the proofs (so everything is already developed) and a cd of all of the images since he shoots all digital... i think that compared to what someother brides are paying for photo packages I am happy to save the extra money and make my own album....

I guess we're going to have to look into finding a photographer that will do this...Thanks
