Photography-Ladies please help settle something for me...

Original post by Goldi1021

I have started looking at photgraphy today. I realize technology has changed pretty much to digital. Is this how it is for most photography companies? Or do some prefer and still use film. I am trying to sell my mom (who is 73) on the idea of digital technology and it isn't working. It is so much more cost effective but she doesn't get it. To her, change is not good. Any input would be appreciated.

some photographers use both. Mine is using digital for the color prints and film for the black and whites

Same here...we will have some physical proofs and the rest will be on CD...It took us some time to explain to my mom that she will not be 'pysically' touching all our wedding pictures, that she will have to watch them on tv...I still don't think she gets it...

My mom doesnt and wont get it,. Its just not worth it. If she wants 1000 proofs, she will get 1000 proofs. Film or digital. Ugh

My photographer is all digital but we are getting all our proofs (which she anticipates being over 1000 in printed version as well as in the digital negatives.) We noticed that there were some many varieties of how the digital cameras were affecting packages but for us we wanted the proofs but we also wanted a large number of pictures in general.

Someone posted this before, but there are very few photographers that are printing in a dark room. I did see one who pictures were amazing but they were EXTREMELY expensive. Almost all the photographers out there are sending there pictures out to a lab an therefore traditional and digital will be printed exactly the same way.

Hope that helps

Even though they are printed the same way, what you're starting with is different and completely effects the quality. It's not the printing (although I am big on this too), it's the initial image quality

ETA: You also ahve to watch with these all digial studios. SOme of them arent even printing ral photos, you're getting something off an inkjet, or that's what it looks like. So you have to keep 2 things in mind, initial image quality (which is the negative or digital file) and then print quality

Our photographer used film also. I too thought that film looked better. JMHO

OMG. If you're getting the negatives, go DIGITAL!!!!

I was able to upload the prints to snapfish, print out 4x6 prints to my heart's desire and I made albums for ALL of our aunts, uncles, bridal party participants, parents, so on and so forth.

And, no one can tell that they're digital!

You can even open them up on your screen and use the 'magnifying glass' to zoom into the background and see what's going on!

awesome stuff!

I understand the technology 100% there is no need to sell me on how it all works. I see the logic and cost effectiveness as well as practicality of using digital and online stuff. However, this 73 year old woman still can't operate the DVD player we bought her 5 years ago. She is fearful of the unknown and no amount of convincing will change her mind. We saw a photographer yesterday who told us how it works and I flat out told him. My mom will want tangible proofs. He said that he would have to charge a lot more than if we printed the proofs ourselves. I told him it didn't matter - I know mom, and I know she wants proofs of EVERY picture. She likes to put them all side by side and inspect. A screen is not user friendly and no amount of tutelage on our part will help her understand. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. I suppose it isn't always about the money - not as far as she is concerned. I just hope she doesn't throw it all back in our faces when she sees the grand total.

I've seen places that give pritned proofs and it doens't cost an arm and a leg. proline includes proofs and Artisan includes all proofs and negs, as well as proofs online in a week and his packages start at $3300

I haven't booked yet, but I came out of my meeting with Chuck feeling so good about it, and it was such a contrast to the experiences I had with other photogrpahers both on the phone and in person

Leslie-how did your meeting go with Artisan??

I booked them also! I have to thank Jen (Marymoon) though, she actually told me about them also! I hope it went well!

One great aspect of digital is that the photographer can view the pic as soon as he shoots to either disgrad, redo or save. Makes for a much better pic selection at the end for your album.

I have a friend who is a photographer and she said that film is the way to go for wedding pics because they will last longer and not lose color etc. I have also read that film is better. I chose a photographer who shoots in film and converts it to digital so you kind of get the best of both worlds. Check out Artisan- they are excellent.

Can you settle on a package that has both? I had both digitals and film. (truthfully, we didn't do anything with the film prints except put them into a proof album)

we used 100% digital

when they are printed she'll never know the difference.

is she going to walk around and look in the cameras?

i think the pictures came out fantastic!

Well I did some homework and honestly, I saw a difference. I felt that the film had more richness to it. I even looked at our families various albums from the past 15-30 years and they still have maintained the color over time. Digital hasn't been around long enough to prove to me that over time, it will look as good as film. It may be cheaper up front, but I'd rather go with what makes us all feel comfy. I guess it isn't always about saving money. I don't want to have any regrets and second guess myself when I look back on my choices. I do like the idea of shooting in film and doing digital editing. That will probably be the way we go. Thanks for all of the input ladies.
