Photography ... Payments - Has This Happend to You?

I saw a post recently on this subject and didn't pay a ton of attention... till now.

I met with the photographer... the 'Final' meeting. And before we leave she wants another payment -okay fine. She wants ALL of it, less 300 bucks! I thought, you must be kidding me!! She even goes on to say that there's a lot of work involved and she probably won't have the final albums ready for about 6 months after the wedding, and thinks, somehow this justifies me paying her all but in full.

I was Not Happy. I held back $1,000, and still I feel like I was taken.

Is this common????

i have pretty much the same deal. everything is due about a month before our wedding date except for about $500 which we pay when we pickup the proofs.

HOWEVER, this is something that she should've mentioned to you when you booked her and it definitely should've been written into your contract!

Everything was outlined in my contract before hand. I just dropped off my final deposit before wedding on Saturday. I owe $1000 at the time of proofs, whic is 1 month after wedding and then I will have albums and video 1 month after I give them the final decisions.

Ok The way the place I used to work for, You would make the 1st deposit on booking usually anywhere between 150.00-250.00 then the 2nd deposit before the wedding.

At the time of pick up of the proofs BASICALLY MOST OF THE PACKAGE IS PAID UP/.. When you bring the proofs back you pay the rest and them make a deposit on any extras...

I insisted that I give her the last one third when we pick up our albums. My photographer had no problem putting that into the contract instead of paying before I had my albums.

my deal was laid out in the contract. i had installment payments up to the wedding date. the final 1k is due a month later when proofs/albums are ready.

Hi There - it was my post where I asked if it was customary to pay in full before the proofs. It ended up that my photographer did not take 100% of the balance and left about $500 when we pick up the proofs.

I would honestly negotiate and tell her that you just don't feel comfortable paying 100% until there's a final product.

I paid in full before the wedding. Honestly I did not have a problem with this.

I am also paying in full. Honestly, you have a written contract to protect you anyway.

I'm not paying in full until I pick up my proofs. The payments were:
1/3 to book
1/3 a month before the wedding
1/3 when I pick up my proofs

I wouldn't pay anyone in full for a service before I actually receive the service from them (i.e., before my wedding day) - just my own opinion (i'm a lawyer so that could explain my feelings)

We paid our photographer all but $400 The rest is due upon completion of the job (when we get our albums)

It's not uncommon for albums to take up to 6 months. I'm married almost 5 months and we haven't even gotten the picture choices from our parents yet to give the photog for their albums.

I guess we were in the rare minority. We paid our photographer about 60% of our payment when we picked up the proofs. Before the wedding, I had given her 20%, at the wedding I gave her 20%.

Sounds like Spelman. My father went in and said, 'I own my own business and I don't make people pay almost all of the balance before the work is done.' So we held back more money.
