the most important things for me were ownership of the negatives/proofs and flexibility with album making (i want to do it, with help of my photographer)...
i really analyzed the images presented to me of single events to see how they told a story. i asked how many total photographs were taken so i could guestimate the great shots to overall taken ratio.
in the end, my favorite photograph was his favorite photograph, i think that says something...

if you plan to have enlargements look at them to see the quality, are they blurry or crisp...
look at the work of the SPECIFIC photographer you would be getting.... they might show you great work, but you might end up with a different photographer and work that doesnt look as good... and have the photographer put into the contract...
if you havent heard of the photographer before then you might want to meet them before you book, to make sure you feel comfortable and confident with them....

i wanted to be sure that we got to keep the proofs, that we got 3 parents albums, that the shots were not all traditional but that some photojournalistic/artsy pix would be taken as well.

MAke sure b/w is included and they are not charging extra to change color film to bw. also what the minimum amount of photos they are taking and have it written
