I have a Gray too!!!! His name is Elvis, what's yours?

Elvis doesn't like raw carrots but loves corn, raw broccoli, sugar snap peas...pretty much anything I give him.

My bird is a plucker so I don't post any pictures of him on here...he is not pretty anymore!!

Yes he talks A LOT!!!!!

CONSTANTLY!!!
I made the mistake of saying 'Oh f&ck' when I broke something, and he repeated it a few days later!!!

He does everything...the telephone (so good that I ran out of the shower to pick it up, and it was him!)
He answers the phone when it rings (hello, oh hi...ok, ok, allright, Bye). He has these conversations with himself!

He calls my dogs, 'Linus, Rerun..do you want a biscuit?'
His vocabulary is enourmous...definately over 200 words. The scary thing is that he says things at the appropriate times...I sneeze, he says 'godbless you'. Scary!
I knew Greys were one of the most intelligent animals, but it's almost a scary intelligence.

Have you seen the research by Irene Pepperberg (she's been working with Alex, the African Grey for I think 20 years)..anyway, he is now able to read books outloud! He identifies colors, shapes, objects.

It's amazing what these birds are capable of!

Re: (Pic) My bird LOVES his carrots!

Our good friend is an African Grey breeder...and the great thing was we were involved with choosing our bird from when he was just an egg!

The parents laid three eggs, and they hatched on Nov 4th, 6th and 8th. Of course, we picked the Nov 6th hatchling, because that's my birthday as well.

So my bird and I share the same birthday!

My DH has a few Grey's in his pracitce, one is 44 years old!

My bird sound exactly like yours!!! He rings just like our phone, he imitates DH on the phone, if he sees me get a tissue he makes the noises of me blowing my nose, he coughs and sneezes, he laughs when he hears people laugh, he watches wrestling and baseball with us so if DH yells come on so does Elvis. Its quite comical!!

I've had him since he was 5 months old, he was born 10/16/96. I would love to get another one but I think Elvis would be very jealous of another bird in the house.

My DH thought about getting a female for ours, but I don't want to be a breeder, so we're not going to get another.

I think ours was just a few months old when we took him home...he barely had his pin feathers! We were feeding him the baby bird formula and he would open his beak and twist his head like a baby does with it's parents...we'd use s syringe and put the formula in his crop. It was so cute...the breeder let us take him home early because she felt comfortable with my DH being a vet so she wasn't worried about our bird aspirating.

Our bird (Tyco) also does the blowing the nose sound!

How long do they live?

Re: (Pic) My bird LOVES his carrots!

40-50 years is the average, I just asked DH

However, if your bird is on a seed diet and NOT EATING Harrisons pellets as a supplement, his lifespan will be much shorter, possibly cut in half. My DH would be prefer Tyco to be completely off seed and just eating pellets with some people food supplements.

When I took Elvis home he was still being fed by syringe too. I think that is why he bonded to me and not my ex boyfriend (who bought me the bird).
