picking up puppy in 2 weeks!!!

we are picking up our viszla puppy in 2 weeks, and i have so many questions!!! we were planning on crate training, but since we both work full-time, is it absolutely necessary to get a dog walker? OR would we have paper train instead? is there a good book or website that can help us decide what's best for the dog? i keep hearing that crate training is the best thing to do, but we both leave at about 7:30am and DH doesn't get home until about 6pm...that's a long time for a puppy to be in a crate! we live in centerport and we are also looking for a good vet.

any suggestions would be so helpful! thanks

crate training is the best but that amount of time is too long. I would get someone to come in every 3 -4 hours to let her/him out and then put back into crate. As it gets older they will be able to stay in crate for 7 hours or longer. Don't put any food or water in crate and if the dog is real tiny you should put somesort of divider in there. Otherwise they will go to the bathroom at one side of the crate and sleep on the other and you don't want that. Good luck

You can try training the dog on the training pads (wee-wee pads) & you can try one of those circle gates instead of a crate so at least he has some room to move around. I have a 8 month old dog and we have her trained on the pads because we live in a co-op so its better. It works out great!!

what is a dog walker? doesnt sound too good for the dog. crate training is the best thing for dogs.

crate training is good, but if you are gone for long hours a dog walker is an EXCELLENT idea. try to get someone who will primarily just be walking your dog or only a few at a time. when people walk 5-6 dogs at once there is too much of a risk of one getting away
