Pictures - Colorization

Anyone know how to colorize a photo?

I just got Adobe Photoshop CS (version 8) and the help menu is really not as helpful as I'd hoped.

TIA

Thats me and my husband!

You start with a color photo. Create a new layer and make that B&W. Then erase the parts of the b&w layer to reveal the color layer underneath. Voila!

If you want to add color to a black and white shot, that takes more skill and only works on certain photos.

Thanks Stef. Thomas (MCDO15) told me how to do it.

So, for everyone who is having pictures done digitally, have them shoot everything in color. You can easily change them to black & white on your own.

Just an FYI: There is a difference between a photo shot on b&w film and one shot in color film and desaturated. So IMO its not worth having them all shot in color just to have the option of this one kind of enhancement. Good black and white photos are beautiful without doing anything to them.

Didn't know that. Thanks Stef.

You can hand color (or simulate the effect on the pc) true black and white photos with markers like these. The end result looks like

I usually use the magic wand in Photoshop, take out the color, turn the pix into B&W, then add the color back by pasting - I'd much rather do it your way!!! How do you make the second layer B&W? TIA!
