Its based on the system that you need to strengthen your core(from neck to top of legs) in order to get the rest of you in shape. Its a pretty tough workout depending on the instructor.

Re: Pilates
I really like Pilates. I used to take a lot of ballet and this is the closest to the good stretch you get out of dancing. Not only does it strengthen your core (especially your abs and back), but they also teach you to extend from your core - meaning stretching your arms and lets from the shoulder and hip joints.

Re: Pilates
Are all Pilates classes the same for begginers Are the classes in Manhattan better then the one in Queens. OR Does it depend on the instructor?
I hear that it is excellent to get lean

Re: Pilates
I take pilates classes given at my gym. It's a great workout. Really tones the whole body, gives you better posture and strong abs. It's hard in that it is a really good workout and really works your muscles. The more you do it the easier it gets. I really recommend it!

Re: Pilates
I love Pilates. I started by taking a few private classes at a Pilates studio, then moved on to group classes.

Re: Pilates
I have heard that pilates using the machines are more effective, then using the mats?
How true is that, any info

That may be true. But that means you'll always have to go to a class to do Pilates (unless you have the space and $ to buy equipment) - whereas the mat Pilates you can do at home once you've been taught the moves.
I've been doing Pilates for years now (exclusively on mats) and noticed a change in my body VERY quickly. I've never felt the need to use machines.

Re: Pilates
Where do you all go for pilates? I used to go to a studio in Huntington and then it got to be too much of a ride for me from Smithtown. I did try once a new place in Smithtown that opened recently. Just curious where you all go. Thanks.

Re: Pilates
There is a place on Union Turnpike, but it is in Queens, it is a little too far, from where you go. I have not had a chance on going, because I am still in school. This is our last week. So, hopefully next week I can try the class out.
