PISSED & SCARED

Recieved a letter today from work from employee health saying i need to come in asap and have a PPD test done... and also again in december have another PPD test.. seems i was one of the employees that was in contact with a active TB patient....


scares the crap out of me since... when i know its a TB patient i have to wear a special fitted mask and i ALWAYS do... but for them to send me this letter apparently they didnt know it was a TB patient?

*** well tomorrow ill be going to employee health!!

sorry to crash your board..but I had this happen to me last year about this time. I was an aide on a med surg unit (i wanted the hands on experience before I graduate with my BSN - but anyway) - and I got a letter in the mail that said we had taken care of a patient with Active TB that we didnt know about. Turned out they transferred him to another hospital and that hospital had found out about it. I was a little shocked - but I guess they cant pick up everything - I figured I wouldnt have been so worried I just wanted to know if I DIRECTLY had taken care of this patient or if my co-workers did (the further you are away from the patient the less likely you are to catch it). Well he was MY patient. I had taken care of him the day that he was on our unit. I was floored. I did the follow ups with my doctor and she told me that the chances of catching TB from a patient are VERY slim to none. The people that usually catch it are VERY close to them ALL the time. Like a spouse who is constantly being exposed. Luckily, his care wasnt TOO intensive - or I would have had a higher chance of being infected.

I would take a few deep breaths, there is nothing that you are going to be able to do to change it right now. Go for your scheduled PPD tests and stay on top of it. I wouldnt even give it a second thought until you go for your PPD. Also you can request a chest xray even if your PPD is negative just for a safety check to make sure that the PPD was accurate. Hope all turns out well.

Thanks,,,, see thats the thing supposly who ever worked with that patient recieved the letter which means i was working with the patient... im going to get the PPD tomorrow.,.. and hopefull it will be clear and ill get the other one again in december n maybe i will ask for the chest x ray,,, this is a reason y i HATE working at a hospital... FH wAs so pissed.... hes like go now and get a PPD lol

That person would of had to cough right on you and your would of had to inhale the droplets. I wouldn't worry... but I took care of alot of random people in nursing school and my best friend did as well. After school we got jobs together and her PPD was postive. Before nursing school it had been negative. She must have been exposed, it freaked me out but the chances are so rare. Her arm had a giant lump after like 12 hours. She doens't have active TB and she took all those horrible drugs so she never will get it. Her chest X-rays were fine.

u see i dont even want a pos ppd.... what am i gonna do... i found out today that there was like 15 of us that had to get the ppds ,,, and i have to go bak again in 3 mnths for another one
