Place card etiquette

Place card etiquette

Hi, I couldn't find the answer to this via a few searches but I'm sure it's come up before.

Place card etiquette:

For married couples we're putting Mr. and Mrs. so and so, that's easy.

For unmarried couples though, do the men's names go first, or should it be the woman's name if she is the one who is closer to us?

For example, my grandmother is bringing a guest, would his name go first or hers?

For the invitations, we put first the name of the person who is closer to us.

Thanks!

That's what we did too. Whoever was closer to us, we put that name first. Is it proper ettiquette? I don't know.... I guess it comes down to what you want to do.

for single ppl with guests...even engaged i would always put whomever i'm closer to first
like if i grew up with Mary Jane Smith
and shes bring her long time boyfriend John Brown...
then I would write

Ms. Mary Jane Smith and Mr. John Brown
Table No: #

I know your question is not about married couples but please just don't write Mr. and Mrs. John Doe. I refuse to give up my first name and lots of women told me at my wedding that they were so happy that they were finally referred to by their first name rather than Mrs. John

just something to think about.

I think that single people are each supposed to receive their own placecards.

But for married people with, e.g., different last names, the wife goes first.

Yeah, I would list everyone seperatley, except your guests who are bring guests that you do not know their last name of, then would write' Ms. Jane Doe and John
and so many married couples now adays have seperate last names, i'm gogin to jsut list everyone seperate.

We made individual table cards for everyone. We basically talked to everyone coming to the wedding because of all of the calling around we had to do to confirm guests coming or not. Lots of past the date rsvps

i am planning to do one per person and skip the Dr/Mr/Mrs/Ms altogether even though we did this for the invites. i pretty much know all the names and if i run across one that i don't know i will pick up the phone and ask...

i doubt that this is 'popper etiquette', but i have been inventing my own version all along...
