ok i am a little confused. are these necessary or not? do they go on the table when people come in?and then they bring them to their table with them?also who writes the names on them? do i get the people who did my invitations or do i write them up myself? and what happens to them after the wedding? do the guests take them or do we collect them and they get tossed? sorry if these are silly questions but i need help!

i don't think they're necessary...we're using them to double as a favor (christmas ornament) but, most times they are just a folded card and they look great like that

Here is mine:
I had them all on a table for the guests to take them to their seat. Then they could jingle the bell to get us to kiss.

No, I don't think that they are necessary. We are just using paper placecards with no holder. I just feel like whatever it is will get left behind and that is just money spent unnecessarily. Unless of course you'd like to attach your favor as the placeholder, or give your guests a little extra gift.
