I am doing (sonicstef's idea) votive candles 2 for $1 at Micheals when they have a sale. You put tea lights, not votives in them (a bag of 50 is $4.99 on sale). Then you print out everyone's name and table on the computer, cut out the names and wrap the names around the votive. Have the hall lite the tea lights before everyone walks in.
I also saw in Martha Stewart a large board with the room layout (very colorful) and names next to the tables.
Also, small vases with a single daisy in it and a small hang-tag with the name and table on it.
Or you can use fruit with a tag pinned in (like pears, small pumkins for fall, etc.) or small potted flower, plant.
I've also seen the big chart done framed with everyone's name on it but that really works best with a small wedding. The one I went to only had about 65 guests.
We are using placecards we had made from Picture Yourself Graphics (they advertise on this website). I sent in two photos of my FH and I when we were children, and we had them made into childhood wedding portraits that we'll use as placecards. It's such a cute idea and we can't wait to see everyone's reaction. However, if your wedding is this May, you probably won't have time to do that :(
here is something I came across...very inexpensive and cute!! They're placecard holders shaped like a bell or a leaf, in brass or silver, and they are only $1.10 for 12!! Just an idea!

Mini - 1in flowerpot with mini silk flowers, the placecard is tucked in the boquet. Very easy to make.
If you don't mind my asking, how much did your placecards cost?
the placecards can not be purchased without first purchasing one of her portrait packages. We ordered one of the portrait packages in December, and were very happy with how it come ou t, so we contact the lady again adn she did the placecards for us. The portrait package was up there in price, but worth it - i think about $180.
The placecards were a little expensive too, but like I said, we went for it because it was such a cute idea. It was $18 for 20+ placecards (the order is by sets of 20, but somehow we had some extras).
Check out her website for more details:

I saw somewhere where they have heart shaped place cards that fit around the stem of a champaign glass. You have all the glasses on a table and have someone close by to fill them up as people find there glass.
But I forget where I saw them...sorry.
