my mom is determined to hold an engagement party for me.. i'm still undecided as to whether I want one or not. mostly because I dont want her to take on all of this work and financial responsiblity. (She's a widower, and my brother is starting college in the fall.).
So she has agreed to consider holding it in a restaurant rather than in her home where she would have to cook for 40-50 people (Way too many people but it's impossible to reduce when I have over 30 in my immediate family alone.) Does anyone know of any places where we can have an engagement party of approximately 50 people? Light fare, nothing heavy.. maybe even an engagement breakfast? I'm open to anything to keep costs down to the absolute minimum..

We had a GREAT engagment party brunch at Mim's in Roslyn Heights. They also have a location in Syosset.
The food was great, the prices were reasonable, and they were really accommodating!
There are a few pics in my album if you want to take a peek.
Try Peppercorns in Hicksville, BKSweeney's in Bethpage. You can go on KPSearch.com and you'll find tons of restaurants with party rooms. Most show you pics of the place, catering menu and pricing. That's where I found the place for my RD

We had ours at an Italian restaurant in Nesconset called Giorgios. They have a separate room for parties that can hold up to 50 people. The food was delicious, the service was great, and I think the price was reasonable too.

Here's an alternate idea (assuming that she can have a party with 40-50pp in her home). The day after my wedding my FMIL is hosting a casual party/BBQ in her home for whoever wants to come (anyone from the wedding is invited). She's having it catered, and hiring a waitress for clean-up, but it's much cheaper than having it in a restaurant. FMIL did this day after FSIL's wedding and we had about 120pp throughtout the entire day (people were coming and going all day) and it was great! Her neighbors brought over extra tables and chairs, a friends loaned us a tent for the backyard, and the food was good (I'm not sure who she used). FM me if you want me to find out info.

I didn't want an engagement party either. FH and my mother joined forces on me. We had a black and white party at Papa Joe's (nothing fancy). Try Beachtree in Islip. They do brunches, lunches, dinner. It is good food and not expensive at all. My FH and I go there for lunch a lot. We love it. Actually that is where we go for lunch everytime we book a vendor. hehe...silly but cute celebration.

Waterzooi has a GREAT brunch. Located in Garden City. We have thrown at least 4 brunch parties there. It's amazing and there are many different packages to choose from. The website does not do the restaurant justice.

Good Luck!!

we were also worried about cost as we are paying for the party ourselves. with family and bridal party alone, we are looking at 55+. We thought about a restaurant - that would have run us about $2500. Instead we opted to have the party in FH's godmothers backyard on the water. With the same amount of people, catering, rentals for chairs, tables, umbrellas etc, decorations, fresh flower centerpieces, a cleaning crew ... we are still coming in about $1000 cheaper than a restaurant. This way, we also have complete control over the whole night and no time limit to enjoy the day with our family and friends!!

Oh! And I almost forgot http://www.56thfgrestaurant.com/
My cousin held a brunch there and it was less than 20 dollars per person (without alcohol) but worth checking into. It's very cool venue and you can check out the planes flying in and out (not noisy at all)
