I want to surprise my FH and take him on a weekend trip the second week of October (We usually go on a real vacation in the summer, but can't because of money being tight.) Any suggestions on places to go that are within 1-3 hours of here and cheap?

Block Island, Montauk (both places in October are reasonable). Good old New York City... Shelter Island, Martha's Vineyard. Connecticut for a few days (take the ferry over) or take it over and drive up to Boston. My mom and sister just got back from there-- they loved it!!! They said it was gorgeous and there is SO much to see.

OK, if you love the outdoors I really suggest going up to Hunter Mountain in October.
There is an Octoberfest there with live music, beer, craft vendors, etc...
You can also take the lift up to the top of the mountain and hike down or just hang out up there and take the lift down again. It is the most breath taking thing to see once you get up there.
we just got back from Mohegan Sun! Had a good time!

Montauk or Port Jefferson...Port Jeff has an adorable bed and breakfast right near the ferry!

I loved Hunter Mountain! I was there in the winter but the fall has to be breathtaking! Vermont is also a good one. My family used to go up to the Okemo Mountain area in the fall and the trees are georgous!! Theres a lot of little B&B's you could do and there's Woodstock and Weston which are my 2 fav towns with great little shops and a theatre.

Re: Places to go for a Weekend Trip
I second Mystic, CT. We spent a couple of days there last month and stayed at the Steamboat Inn, right on the water. It was wonderful. We spent an afternoon in Newport, RI walking along the Cliff Walk, which is a 3.5 mile path along the Atlantic Ocean, in front of these incredible mansions.

Re: Places to go for a Weekend Trip
We're planning a trip to Newport, RI next month. The trip should be about 4 1/2 hours in total and you have the option of cutting down driving time if you take the Port Jeff or Orient Ferry. There are a ton of cute little B&B's and since you are going during the off season, you could probably get a great room with a view for a good price.
FM me if you need any info...I've done a lot of research.
Atlantic City is always fun, plus the outlets are a nice bonus. I've heard the Mohonk Mountain House is gorgeous (pricy, but gorgeous). While you're up there you can hit New Paltz (cute little town - my sister owns a store there!) and Poughkeepsie, Woodstock... Boston is always a fun time. The Sheraton at the Prudential Center is great to stay at, and there is a ton of stuff to do right there.

What about Boston? I know it's a little farther than you want (about 4 hours from the city), but it's such a great city. So much history and things to do, great bars. I love it
