Theresa's post has me wondering where can you find:
Good schools
Cultural activities (theater, concerts, dance, book stores, etc.)
Jobs
Affordable housing in relation to salary
I think the first 3 make the fourth impossible, but I hope I'm wrong!

Re: Places to Live Other than Metro NYC
My girlfriend just bought a home in Monroe NY. Its a HUGE high ranch on 1/2 acre with a lake and she has a stream in her backyard.
The schools are great and the area is beautiful and the commute to NYC isn't too bad.
I don't know about anything cultural though. I'd have to check with her.
Housing on LI is ridiculous. We just bought a house that we know 2 years ago was half the price. Its on a small piece of property but it was the best we've seen, its really nice, a little over 1800 square feet and we did get a good deal. Its better than paying rent!
It was very hard for us to leave NYC...our (well mine...DH would love to live in the middle of nowhere) requirements were a major city (where there would be culture, etc) and near an ocean and nice weather...
this brought us to San Diego, LA and San Fran...the smog threw LA out...the rain threw SF out...so here we are in SD!!!

Boston! For number 4 you couldn't live right in Boston, but maybe 20 minutes away. Salaries are basically the same as New York, good schools, culture -- but homes cost a bit less.

Valenia! Where outside of Boston? I love Boston!
I heard it's even possible to commute to Boston from New Hampshire - is this really true?

Re: Places to Live Other than Metro NYC
morristown, new jersey.
one hour by train to nyc. great little town with shops & restaurants & a town square. there are two department stores in town too. very historic. there is a theater in town where we saw a jazz concert with wynton marsalis recently. lots of museums around. lots of big corporations have headquarters here too.
we love it here! we live about one mile outside the 'green' (town square). there is a park with a lake down the block from us. lots of young families. lots of huge, beautiful, expensive houses & lots of normal ones too.
