What do you think...does plastic surgery empower women to feel good about themselves or does it just allow you to look like every other woman that Hollywood says you should look like?

I think if someone has such a poor self esteem issue, and this will overcome that I say go for it. If you are trying to look like everyone else, I think it is pathetic.....

They have so many looks.
Pam Anderson is THin THINk with implants..
Jo Lo is well curved with hips and coolie.............
Angelia Jolie is toned and strong!!!!!!
So what does Hollywood really pass the message? That women can look MANY ways and still look great? YES!

I think that if it makes them feel better about themselves and its something they really want, then I don't see anything wrong with it. If they just do it to please someone else then I don't think its a good idea.

So the physical change changes your mental views? I find it hard to believe that people can change that easily just by going under the knife.

Think about it. If you look one way one day and mentally that upsets you then when you go under the knife and change mentally you will see yourself diff..
For me.. Persay..
I did my nose bc it was big and it made me upset to look at it..
I did my boobs bc I lost alot of weight. I had the skin and no more boobie.... We all do it for diff reasons!

I think it depends.. If you are using plastic surgery as a means of fixing a problem you have had that has harmed you emotionally (such as cleft palate, etc) then fine.
But I think if you are pursuing some type of goal to 'look' like something and that is your one obsession- then I would say that no matter what yo ulook like you will not be happy.

Did you ever watch that show 'Extreme Makeovers?' Some of those people really hate the way they look and it may make them unsocial because they are so insecure. If they would feel better getting a nose job or a little breast uplift, then I don't see anything wrong with it. It seemed to have changed the way a lot of those people feel about themselves and gave them more confidence.

Hollywood was a broad example. While there are many looks in H/wood - there is one underlying message: you can't get old and still be desireable/sexy...thus, the surgery-laden Hollywood that we all know and love!
Anyone over 40 who hasn't had surgery, is forever stuck in the 'mother role'...while the Connery's & Douglas' of the world are forever teamed up with the 'under 27' crowd.

I'm not trying to say it's wrong or right - just want to make that clear. It's a personal decision - and I'm not judging.
I guess I don't understand it b/c I would never do it. Was just curious as to what everyone else thought.
I know quite a few women who have had surgery...it hasn't changed the way they view themselves - they still notice 'flaws' and now know there is a 'quick fix' - surgery. They still compare themselves to other women and complain about other women for 'being so thin' or 'so pretty' or whatever.

Yeah, WE might, Theresa...but you'd never see her *romantically* paired up in a movie with someone HALF her age.

Re: Plastic Surgery...Empowering or Conforming?
Dr. Knockman Rosenfeld.. He is in Queens, NYC, Long Island, New Jersey and BKLYN.....
He has a very nasty bedside manner but I love my implants. for as big as they are they look natural and I have no visable scar..

I don't think if you have low self esteem if you get plastic surgery it is going to automatically make you the most confident person in the world. Just like Oprah said losing the weight did not make her confident right away and a lot of other fat people have attested to this. I think if it makes you feel better and look better, then do what you must.

Re: Plastic Surgery...Empowering or Conforming?
There are confident and self conscious people who do everything. I think some get their breasts done b/c they are forced to b/c they had mastecomony's and others just want do it for themselves those I see nothing wrong with.
What bothers me about plastic surgery are NOT the people who want to do it for themselves - that is their choice and who am I to tell someone they shouldn't do something like that if it makes them happy - what DOES bother me are the girls I hear say well I got them done for my BF or DH or FH b/c he wanted me to get them - I see a big difference with someone who gets them b/c they want to and girls who get them b./c they feel that it will make someone else happy - (this goes for any kind of PS)

Re: Plastic Surgery...Empowering or Conforming?
I couldn't agree more with Shamma...and I agree with Christine to a point. I'm not going to judge anyone - do what you want...unless you've come to me for advice and I disagree with you, then I'll tell you so. But otherwise, like I said, I'm not going to judge. I'm just curious about how most average women feel about societal pressures and plastic surgery.
FTR - I don't consider breast reduction or implants due to masectomy's to be under the guise of 'plastic surgery'. I was referring more to cosmetic surgery for the sake of not being happy with something(s) on your body.
