does anyone know if platinum can be buffed? i have a platinum solitaire and was wondering if they can buff it to make it shine like new for the wedding - when i clean it, it shines, but there are scratches in it.....im going to ask the jeweler but since we arent going there anytime soon just wondering if anyone here knows.....i know that over time platinum gets a patina from the wear/scrathes but im not actually sure what that is or looks like

Yeah, my jeweler told me b/4 the wedding i will leave my ring there for a day or two and he will buff it for me and make it as good as new.
God knows i scratched the sh*t out of it!!!

Re: Platinum Question
I'm getting mine done once a year from the jeweler who designed it. He said I only have to leave it for an hour and a half and it will look like new.

Re: Platinum Question
You can, but only a number of times. Platinum is really a thin metal, hence the reason why places that don't try to make the $$ off of you will tell you to go with white gold because it's stronger and it will last a lot longer. I'm sure since it's new it will work for the wedding......you can always get it redipped too.

I thought Platinum was one of the strongest metals?

I guess I wrote it wrong.........the reason why you SHOULDN'T be on here when teaching LOL (I'm giving a test right now).
I don't know why I wrote about the thin metal or whatnot lol I just meant to say that I know that white gold can be buffed and rebuffed and dipped and redipped over and over again and regain its original shine. The platinum band doesn't do that. There, that's what I meant lol sorry for the confusion.

Re: Platinum Question
see i thought that with platinum the metal is displaced - it doesnt actually wear away like gold does - if you got a gold band buffed eventually it would wear away, and even wears away when its scratched.... i thought platinum was the opposite? i thought it doesnt wear away - but thats what i read once so im not sure...i do know that it scratches the easiest even though its strong....

Re: Platinum Question
even though platinum is strong, it can still get nicked and scratched easily. the only thing is, with platinum scratches the metal is basically 'moved' around and so it can easily be rebuffed again to look like new. i dont think gold can have the same effect. it would have to be redipped maybe.

Re: Platinum Question
I just had both my e-ring and wedding band polished and they look like new!!! Mine started to look 'milky' from them rubbing together and the jeweler said you should have it polished about once a year!
