We were ALL about platinum. Now we went looking again yesterday (as well as tuxes, we had a busy weekend!) and the ring that FH wants is either $250 for 18K white gold or $1000 for platinum! If he has to keep getting it dipped, b/c it will yellow, is it worth it? Is saving $800 worth it?
As for MY ring, I am looking at an antiquey ring that really doesnt have much plain white gold/platinum on it...more diamonds and cut shapes. I just dont know what to do here. We are getting positives and negatives of both. Even the jewelers say that they are not a fan of platinum, b/c it scratches easily and its harder to fix if you had to....... What are you guys doing, and why?

Re: Platinum vs 18k white gold
We're doing platinum because it's harder and FH is rough on his jewelry... Also I have a white gold ring and it gradually turned yellow and I just wanted something that would last forever...
(from several websites research: 'Hardness of platinum is 3.5 while only 2.5 for gold. Besides, platinum alloys used in jewelry usually contain 5% Iridium which make it even harder')

Re: Platinum vs 18k white gold
my band will be platinum bc thats what my ering setting is and i can see the difference when its next to white gold. FH has his dads band, but if he didn't we would probably get platinum, just because we both like the way it looks

Re: Platinum vs 18k white gold
I prefer platinum. I truly believe that the jewelers push us toward white gold because it is easier to work on (sizing, or any other work) and they have more of it in stock. I have had some of my yellow gold jewelry dipped and it does turn back to yellow pretty quickly. I do understand about price being an issue b/c I have a diamond that I inherited and I want to make a pendant. I can get it done custom in white gold for about 1/4 the price of getting something custom in platinum. I've been waiting 'til I have extra $$ for platinum. DH and I got all our rings in platinum. We are both very tough on our hands and jewelry.

I think it depends on the type of ring you are getting. Since, FH will be a plain band we are probably going to get a platnium band, but since I want an eternity band covered in diamonds I really dont care what type of metal is under the diamonds because it wont show.

Re: Platinum vs 18k white gold
Our jeweler suggested fh get white gold. it hardly tarnishes on a man. i have platinum, but that is because i have seen my white gold rings tarnish already. i think white gold is absolutely fine.!

Re: Platinum vs 18k white gold
My E-ring is plat. but my wedding band is 14K white gold. You cant even tell the difference b/c there are diamonds on both bands. Plat. scratches!!! Very easily. Im glad my DH picked the 14k- not only was it cheaper, but he doesnt wear it all the time (is a landscaper), and the scratches are minute compared to what he would have done to a plat. band.
