Platnium Rings: Question...

I know a of you girls wear them. I don't, but Jim does. He's concerned cause he's already scratched it up and put tiny 'dings' into it. Noticible.

I told him not to worry, no biggie it's normal.. but am I right?

Any insight would be great.

Re: Platnium Rings: Question...

It's normal. Platinum is softer than gold. My e-ring has tiny indents/scratches on the bottom. Not too noticeable.

Re: Platnium Rings: Question...

You can have the ring polished to take out any scratches. I have had it done at Fortunoff and the ring looked just as great as the day he gave it to me!!!

Re: Platnium Rings: Question...

It's very common and easily fixed. They come out fantastic when they are polished up! What's cool about platinum is that the band is really pushed in...the metal moves it doesn't break away like with gold or silver.

We have plat wedding bands but since DH's job is physical he wears a titanium band for work. They are indestructible.

Re: Platnium Rings: Question...

I think it was cute when at first he hid it from me like I'd be mad he banged it up!

I was like 'babe, you're gonna wear to your death bed, it's BOUND to be damaged along the way!'

My jeweler told me the opposite- platinum breaks away and gold moves around.
I was told not to get it polished more than once a year, because it will wear away.

It polishes up very nice, though!

Re: Platnium Rings: Question...

Platinum is self healing....like someone else said, the metal just moves, it doesn't chip away.....the scratches actually fill in again adding to it's 'luster'

Nope, it's the other way around. This is from Jewelers.org

Will platinum scratch?
Signs of wear, including scratches, will inevitably appear in all precious metals, even in platinum. However, due to platinum's durability and strength there is usually little metal loss when the piece is scratched. If your platinum jewelry does develop visible scratches, you should have the piece repolished by a professional jeweler.

Re: Platnium Rings: Question...

It's called a patina & is actually considered a good charactaristic for platinum.
