Please clarify something re: photo/video lighting

My FH and I are having a (minor) argument right now about photo and video and the lighting. I'm saying it's possible to get a videographer (DVD or video?) that will not have a spotlight on the whole time. Also, our photographer (12th Night) uses digital. Can you please explan to us exactly how the lightd work? Is it just a flash that goes off with every picture? They explained it to me but I don't remember the details

As far as I know both the photogrpaher and videographer will only use spots and flash when necessary. So less for outdoor pics, probably almost always for indoor pics. AYou really don't notice it that much. Sometimes the still photog will have a small flash or a lighting assitant with one, other photogs have mounted strobes all around the dance floor tog et good crowd shots. You really won't notice it that much at all. Have you ever really noticed flashes or video camera spots while dancing the ngiht away at the wedding? Your guests will be too busy getting down to notice

unfortunately that's the problem..FH HATES video at weddings b/c he hates having a big light shining on everyone when they're dancing, etc.
I know my photographer uses mostly the lights that are in the camera (flash? more?) and some of the video sites seemed to say something similiar..I'm just confused!

I agree with your FH. Lots of weddings are destroyed by the blaring spotlight from the videographer or photographer. I don't remember exactly what was explained to us but we were sure to pick a photog. and videographer who assured us that they were not going to blind our guests. I believe I was told that the more modern cameras can take great pictures (or video) with lower wattage of spotlights. Our photog. had a lighting assistant who held the flash but I only remember the flash going off during our pre-wedding photo session. My DH is the more technical one and he understood what I wanted and talk to all the photographers and videographers about it.
