I asked someone b/4, they said we should tip them $3-5 per person, which means if you have 300ppl in your wedding, the min. you have to tip is $900 for the MD,,,

We are NOT following any rules. If they work hard, they will get tipped appropriately.

FH does not want to tip, I am undecided. Maybe - if anything $100 - $200 and that is already going to be breaking the bank.
What's the worst that can happen if you don't tip - the night is already over!

Re: Please explain this to me
But if it's already included in the contract that you are paying them a certain percent from your RH fee do you still tip them?

Usually the gratuity goes to the waitstaff, chef, and bartender. So, the maitre'd doesnt get any of that tip -- therefore, you still need to tip the maitre'd and bridal attendant.

The 20% is now considered a service charge and not a gratuity. Understand that the 20% covers their salary only and nothing else. And the 20% doesn't pay just the waitstaff, it goes to EVERYONE... believe me, I used to cater. If I made what everyone thought I made based on that 20%, I would still be a catering waitress.
You don't have to tip anyone, although it is understood that the MD and bridal attendant receive some extra based on the quality of services.

What does that mean? A service charge by whom? The RH? Who gets that money? If it's going to the wait staff, then it's a tip. I was told that we should tip the Maitre d', and that's fine, but there is no way he's getting $3.00-$5.00 per person. $500 on top of his salary for six hours work, and we're having a small wedding? Nope, not happening. They can spit at us and call us cheap, I won't care.

The 20% service charge covers the pay of the staff working your wedding. When I worked in a RH, I got paid $50 shift pay. That means I got $50 if it was a wedding, christening, shower, whatever. The maitre 'd got $100 shift pay. That his salary for the day. That's all that 20% covers.
I know that $3-5 dollars extra can reallly add up. However, understand that the maitre 'd runs your entire party to ensure it's perfection. You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes that they make sure is going perfect to make you happy. They make sure that everything is set up according to plan, all the waitstaff is assigned and doing their job, the food is coming out on time, they cue the band/DJ, they make sure your vendors aren't d!cking around, and they make sure everything looks perfect. They work like dogs to make sure your wedding is great. If your wedding goes exactly how you want, to stiff them on a tip is a slap in the face. However, if your party has numerous issues, adjust your tip accordingly. If there are problems at your party, 9 times out of 10, the maitre 'd was sleeping on the job. I personally did not work as a maitre 'd but I certainly knew how much they were busting their azz's to make everyone happy.
I understand that it's a lot of money to keep having to shell out, but they aren't seeing the money that you are initially paying to the RH, minus their shift pay. To not tip them if your party is awesome is not only cheap, it's downright rude.
