Please explain to me about laying on your back...

You ARE or ARE NOT allowed to sleep/lay on your back after your 1st trimester. I always thought you were not allowed, but I've talked to a couple of mommy's in the last few days and they say I'm crazy - it's no sleeping/laying on your belly. Please clarify

Some of my friends were told to sleep on their left side, but my doctor told me that any way I was comfortable enough to sleep was fine.

I was just reading today that you should not lie on your back...it stops the blood flow to the baby or something like that...don't quote me on this, but, I think I'm right.

ETA...I think the book was even mentioning about working out/exercising on your back too is a no-no (for the same reason).

I slept on my back my entire pregnancy, although my dr told me to sleep on my left side (better blood for for my baby) she said that sleeping on your back isnt detremental. I did however have back and hip pains and some nights I felt like I couldnt breathe while I was on my back, but its all about making you feel comfortable

Lying flat on your back decreases blood flow in the inferior vena cava, which is a big vessel that returns blood to the heart. It decreases blood flow bc of the added weight and the position of the uterus after the first trimester. If you just put a little pillow under your right butt cheek, this is enough to take the pressure off, you don't actually have to lay all the way on your left side. This becomes more of an issue in late pregnancy.

OK good. I always go to sleep usually on my left side but I automatically wake up in the middle of the night if I'm on my back. Now at least I know it's probably OK for just a little while - but not every night for 8 hours!

While it is always felt that the left side is the preferrable posn to bring the best amount of blood flow for the baby the right side works just as well too.

My dr. never said anything to me about sleeping positions, but I found that sleeping on my back while pregnant was very uncomfortable - it felt like some oxygen supply was being cut off! I always slept on my left or right side..
