Please HELP!

Please HELP!

My friend cancelled her wedding two weeks ago. It was scheduled for Saturday Oct 28th 2007 at the Hyatt Windwatch. The Hyatt is telling her that she owes $8,000 because that cancellation law doesn't apply to them because they are an hotel....
They are cancelling more than a year in advance.
Can anyone help me help her on how to get out of this contract? They did not even give the Hyatt a deposit!!!
Thanks much,
Amy

wow! thats horrible. If they didn't leave a deposit, did they sign a contract? I can't see how they would owe money if they didn't leave any money unless they signed a contract. My uncle is a lawyer, will ask him about it, but fm me with all the details.

In the initial contract with the Hyatt, it specifically lists how much money you owe if you cancel at a certain date so I'm not sure if anything can be done about it.

Maybe she can see if someone else wants to book a wedding there on that date.

Thanks Ladies....if anyone else has any more advice please share!
Just so that you know, the Hyatt is being extremely rude and inflexible. They do not have 8,000. They would need to sue them and garnish wages to even get the money.

Re: Please HELP!

that's horrible! i would say spread the word about Hyatt so nobody from liweddings.com or theknot.com uses them!

Threaten Hyatt with that too!

Call 'Help me Howard' or other media involved, this is preposterous! I feel so bad for your friend!

There has to be some sort of agreement if the date is reboked. She should call the Hyatt back.

Like Hyatt would bother to sue and run up legal fees when they can find someone else to take over the date in 1 years time! They're just being a big bully. Hhave your friend read the fine print on the contract. How did they reserve the date without putting down a deposit?

Who is your friend dealing with in Hyatt? perhaps she can escalate her complaint with someone higher up?

Re: Please HELP!

It should be written in their contract what they owe by cancelling. I think she may be able to get around that law, because the $$ is going towards a wedding-the Hyatt may be a hotel, but it is CATERING the event, ie-catering hall.
