What is that thingy they put on maps that looks like a star and has the north, east, south, west on it. For the life of me, I cant think of the word. Please help!!!

I think a legend is the thing that says what the differentt line colors mean & stufflike that.
my friend has a tatto of one one on her back &she called it a compass, but you have me thinking there is another word for it.
