My FH's cousin is getting married labor day weekend in Bethesda, MD. The STD was pretty plain, just printed witha alser printer on a small piece of cardstock. I think it's going to be at a temple. Would you assume this is a formal affair or a not so formal affair? I know up here temples can be very fancy, but I don't know if that's the case in MD, I don't know if any weddings are fancy there. What would you think?
All I have are gowns for black tie, and I'm short and plus suized so if it's not black tie, I want tog et an early start on finding a dress.

Re: Please help me decide what to wear to a wedding!
Can you find out what time of day is it?
If it's in the afternoon, I would say just a regular dress, not black tie attire.

can your FH find out how formal it is? I think it is hard to tell from a STD the formality of a wedding . . .

It's a Sunday evening (but they're jewish so friday and saturday eve are out of the question). Fh doens't know. I'm not really close with his aunt to ask her, and I don't want to seem nosy. Do you think it would be inappopriate to call his aunt and ask if the wedding will be formal? If I explain to her that I just want to plan ahead what to wear?

There are some really nice areas in Bethesda, but if its a daytime affair I would say just wear a nice dress nothing floor length.

Time of day is not always a good indicator for a Jewish wedding.
I would call the aunt, there is no harm in it.

Bethesda is really close to DC, so seeing that it is close to a big city, I think it might be more formal. Can you call a relative to ask?

I don't think you can judge a wedding by the STD card at all, maybe by the invite, but not by the STD.
I think that the Temples outside of NY are somewhat similar to the ones in NY, formal, etc.

I'm not familiar with temple weddings, but as a rule of thumb, I prefer to overdress than underdress when in doubt. I definitely do not think there's any harm calling the aunt or another close relative to find out the level of formality.

I agree that when in doubt, overdress....but try to seek out a family member to ask also....

Re: Please help me decide what to wear to a wedding!
The thing is, with Fh's family I'm ALWAYS overdressed, just on a daily basis. I was wearing a casual skirt and top for passover and they said 'why did you get all dressed up?' and I don't want to wear a ballgown to this wedding if everyone else will be in summer dresses!
Are temples usually more forma or more informal?
I've never been to a temple wedding

My wedding was at a temple (here in NY), and it was formal. All the temple weddings I have been to in the evenings, whether saturday or sunday, have been very formal.

Re: Please help me decide what to wear to a wedding!
My wedding was black tie optional on a sunday night, my friends was black tie preferred on a saturday night. Honestly, there was a wide range...I saw women wearing skirt suits, shorter dresses, and gowns.
Personally, I usually wait to see what the invite says, but I generally wear something long for evening weddings.

I think you can never go wrong with a simple black dress and a nice pair of shoes! Bring along some fancy accessories to stick on if you feel underdressed and you're good to go!
