please help me win a bet with FH--regarding Maui

please help me win a bet with FH--regarding Maui

so FH has been trying to convince me that i want to go to the caribbean for our honeymoon (i don't--i've been to over 10 islands already and don't want to go to another)

his friend just got back from maui and claims it took them 12 hours to drive to some tourist spot on the island. i looked it up and it said maui is 728 sq miles. FH is using this info to tell me that he doesn't want to drive a lot on our HM and maui/hawaii is therefore out of consideration.

728 sq miles isn't 728 miles straight across, so i'm convinced maui isn't that big.

does anyone know how long it would take to drive across maui??? i know it's random, but you guys always find the answers to everything.

i really want to be right on this one....

Maui - Home of 'Lahaina', the famous whaling port and the gateway to whale watching; Haleakala Crater - known as the House of the Sun; The remote and lush paradise of 'Hana'; Kaanapali Beach and the best wind surfing in the world at Hookipa.

Also known as 'The Valley Island', Maui has a total area of 729 sq. miles - 48 miles long and 26 miles wide with 120 miles of coastline. Population is a little over 91,000 residents. The highest point is Haleakala at 10,023 ft above sea level.

Driving Times from Kahului Airport:
Haleakala - 1 hour 45 minutes
Hana - 2 hours 30 minutes
Kaanapali - 50 minutes
Kihei - 20 minutes
Lahaina - 45 minutes
Wailea - 35 minutes
Wailuku - 10 minutes

I'm not sure about 12 hours but it can take a while say if you are staying at the Hyatt/Westin/Sheraton end of Maui and head to the top of the volcano to watch the sunrise maybe around 3 hours no traffic just because there is a lot of one lane roads in Maui .. The Road to Hana can probably take you 12 hours to get to the 7 pools if you make the effort to go that far on the road to Hana just because the roads are very narrow and have one lane bridges .. so maybe thats what he is reffering to but besides those two spots its not that much driving ...

There's no way it takes 12 hours to drive anywhere on Maui.

The 'tourist spot' his friend was probably referring to was the Road to Hana. It's not one spot, but it is a road along the east coast of Maui where you can stop and see all these great sights (i.e., waterfalls, 7 pools, black sand beach, etc.). The trip takes all day because you stop and take short hikes to see the sights plus it is a really curvy road and you have to go slow. It is an awesome trip!

But, in general, nothing takes 12 hours to drive to on Maui!!! So, I'd say you won!!!

He is probably talking about the road to Hana. It took my husband and I took the road to Hana, and it took us 3 hours to get there. And 4 hours to get home.
