Please help me with this math problem.... (teachers? anyone?)

Ok, so I REFUSE to believe that this test has the right answer....

It's an order of operations problem...

(I'm not giving you any of the choices )

480?

Edited to explain: PEMDAS! First you do inside the parentheses, then the exponent, then you multiply and divide (in whatever order those two naturally occur in the problem), then add and subtract.

Is it 480 or have I totally forgotten how to do basic math (which is altogether possible!!!)

So 480 I say??

Who knew 'Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally' would ever come in handy again in our lives?

Re: Please help me with this math problem.... (teachers? anyone?)

Let's see, so PEMDAS.....so....

100 / 5^2 * (70+50)

100 / 5^2 * (120)

100 / 25 * (120)

100 / 3000

1/30

??? do you do the addition inside the parentheses at the P stage or the A stage? I think the P....but I'm really not sure!!

Edit: Oh are the M and the D interchangeable?? damn it's been a long time...in that case I agree that it's 480....!

OKAY, I'm far from a Math person, but I do remember PEMDAS which is parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. That means you'd have to do the 70+50 which is 120 on the right of the X

5 squared equals 25

100/25= 4

So...............
4X120= 480

Is that right? lol I just had a flashback to HS!

if you're going by PEMDAS don't you have to multiply first? so you have to do 25 x 120 before you can do 100 divided by 25...or am i wrong?

And that my friend is why I got 1/30 instead of 480.

Totally forgot that you go in the order of what is in the problem - not literally by PEMDAS

Or...if they're not looking for the solution but only a way to simplify the equation...it could be
4X 120

Right, I'm flashing back to 8th grade: the M and D are interchangeable, as are the A and S. You do whichever one of the two comes first for each.

hmmm... at second look, I thought maybe you could write the problem out as:

100
______

5squared(70+50)

Which would give you:

100
_____

3000, or 1/3, as someone above suggested. But on second look, you can't: the 5squared x (70+50) is not in parentheses, so you can't separate it. Does that help?

1/30 - but yeah. I totally forgot the Left-to-right thing when you get to mult/divide
