please help NWR...what would you do...long...sorry...
I've been working on my masters thesis for six months. My first adviser disagreed with everything that I wrote, so I had to change advisers. I was supposed to complete my thesis by the end of summer session II (July 29)
My prof said today that he will give me credit so I can graduate, but if it isn't up to his standards...by which he means publication standards...not the average standards of a class...I will have to keep working on this paper. That means an indefinite deadline.
I have the wedding to pay for...we just bought a house. I have full time work that does not require that I have a masters degree. I simply cannot financially and mentally afford to have an indefinite deadline on a paper!
I am also taking an independent study with this professor, which WILL be done during summer session 2. That sort of makes things awkward.
I really want to just drop this thesis, take time off from school, and come back and take my last class next spring, summer, or fall. However, I put a lot of pressure on myself to finish my degree fast...I only started my masters in January 2009.
The prof...while I always got along with him...is very rude to most students. So I am afraid of his response if I tell him this...however, I am constantly anxious...literally freaking out on a daily basis...and I can't sleep at night unless I take a double dose of Nyquil because I am up all night thinking about this thesis.
What would you do? Sorry this is so long...if you made it to the end of this, thank you!

write a formal letter to your prof to get your composure in tact and have your points gracefully and poignantly outlined
then use that to go talk to him

If he's giving you the credit so you can graduate, does even doing the thesis matter? If you dont' complete it, are they going to un-gradate you?

I was wondering the same thing. Ughh, writing theses suckkkkk.
If it were me, I would probably just push through and get it over with so it's not hanging over my head....but that's how I am with most things. I completed my Master's program in a year. Are you almost finished with it??

If I had a deadline, I'd be fine with it. However, it's basically an indefinite deadline of me writing the paper over and over until he feels it's up to his standards of approval, which he said standards of publication.

U have made it this far! I would not let myself quit now!! As much as I may want to quit, I would just push through and get it done and over with so that I can enjoy my life.
U will feel soooo relieved and happy when its done and over with. It may mean living in hell for months, but it may be worth it.

My master's thesis was so difficult for me. I say push through it speak to him frankly and give your self dealines one section to rewrite edit at a time. I would be more anxious about not finishing it then finishing it. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

ETA: I do not HAVE to do a thesis to graduate. I chose to. I can go back and just take a regular class.
