Please Help Quick - Pet Emergency!

Please Help Quick - Pet Emergency!

My mom came home from work to find my dog eating a fried chicken breast. My IDIOT brother and his friends apparently left a bucket of fried chicken on the floor in the basement last night and Gizmo found it today while we were all at work. I don't know how much or if he ate anyting, but I am worried that he ate bones. Should I take him to the emergency vet?

its always better to err on the side of precaution...but I would probably just watch the dog...maybe call the vet and see what they say...

I really don't have much advice but it can't hurt to call the vet and see if they suggest you take the dog in.

Good luck and I hope Gizmo is OK!

Ok they said to feed him a lot of food, including bread... and if I notice and vomiting or diarrhea or blood or if he cries when he tries to poop then to bring him in. OK I am not going to be taking my eyes off of him all night!

Chicken bones can kill a dog...I'd take him to the ER vet asap and have them do an x-ray...they can see if there are any bones in there.

Does your regular vet have night hours? First call them and see if they can get him in...if not, go to ER Animal Hospital. I don't know where you live, but my DH has night hours....
GOod luck!!!!!!!!

Maybe I should go even though they told me not to

I think the vet's idea to see if he vomits is an OK one. Keep and eye on him and if you think he seems uncomfortable...take him in. Otherwise wait till tommorow and take him to your regular vet.

I just called my DH at work, and he's going to call me back after he gets out of this one appointment.

So, just wait a few minuets and I'll tell you his opinion.

He seems fine... he just ate 2 whole slices of bread!

Just got off the phone with DH.

Ideally is to get an x-ray done, it may or may not show chicken bones, because they are cartiledge

If you think he ate the chicken bones, you can get some asparagus, and cook it, and cut it in half...give the asparagus to the dog. This will wrap around the foreign object and help to pull it through.

If the dog starts vomiting, bring him to the vet with the potential of doing surgery (you don't want to make him throw up the chicken bones, could do further damage).

My dog did this. She also ate a light bulb. I have a very silly dog!!

Anyway - my vet said that watching her carefully for 24 hours was the best thing. If she seemed in pain trying to have a movement or started throwing up I was to bring her in.

She never showed any signs of discomfort from either the bones or the light bulb and is driving me nuts right now!!!

Just keep an eye out. I am sure he'll be fine.

Re: Please Help Quick - Pet Emergency!

Thanks everyone for your responses. So far Gizmo is doing fine! He is being groomed today so I feel better knowing that he is not home alone. The groomers know what happened and they are going to keep an eye on him for me...and they are right next to a vets office just in case! But I think he is going to be OK!
Kathy I didn't see you asparagus post untiltoday but I wanted to thank you so much for calling your DH for mr. I really appreciate it

Glad Gizmo seems okay.

One of my dogs ate my shower favor (candle) ... I could hear him in the other room chewing on something ... he seems to have a thing for wax (candles & crayons have been a frequent snack!! DOPE!!)

My dog ate DHs electric shaver once, chewed all the metal parts to bits. He also eats bottlecaps. They really are dopey

ETA I hope Gizmo is feeling better!

Re: Please Help Quick - Pet Emergency!

I think if the vet said to just feed him bread and see how he is, then do that. Just check how his poop looks.

My dog or more my parents' dog now has eaten a bagful of chocolates which is supposed to harmful to dogs, but she was fine. Two years ago, she ate a cassette tape! You definitely knew by her poop that it was bad b/c she had the tape film coming out and was stuck in her rectum. She had to get a $2,000 surgery, but she's fine now. So if he's going to the bathroom like normal, it should be okay. Of course, he may have some diarhea anyway just because most dogs get that when they eat something different.
