I don't know if you guys are out-doorsy, but 2 years ago for FH b-day I planned a trip for everyone to go white water rafting in the poconos. Me, FH, his twin brother and his girlfriend went away the night before and stayed at a hotel. They knew we were going white water rafting in the morning, but we surprised them by having all of their friends meet us at the place. You don't have to do it as a surprise, because it was a lot of extra work, but that would be something fun and different. If you don't mind driving a little further, Lake George is always fun, but you may have a hard time getting reservations. Newport is also a great place.
how about a barbeque and invite all his friends and family? or maybe a limo ride into the city for dinner and a show?
Atlantic City for the weekend is always nice, or you could try foxwoods...if he is a sports fan try and take him to a ball game.
