I haven't been to this restaurant in a few years, but I remember they had the best jalepeno dip at the bar and pretty good food. It is called the Bayou and it is in Bellmore on Jerusalem Ave (#2823).
There is also a web page called www.chowhound.com - In the NY board there is a what is my craving section. You might want to place a post there and see what you get. The hounds have pretty great recommendations. I absolutely love that webpage, I use it whenever we are going somewhere.
Good Luck and let us know if you find anything good!

Big Daddy's in Massapequa is supposed to be great but I've never eaten there. Everyone who has raves about it.

Bourbon Street in Bayside has very good food. It is a bar type restaurant....and all the food is cajun style!

I used to go to a great place called Acme Bar & Grill, which is on Great Jones St. (between Broadway & Lafayette St.) Relatively inexpensive, too. I haven't been there in YEARS so I'd call to make sure it's still there, if you want to try it!
Another fun place: Two Boots! Pizza with a Cajun flair, on Avenue A.

Re: Please recommend a cajun restaurant.
hmmmmm... I hope I do not start a controversy, but I have to veto Big Daddy's. If you are not there within 10 - 15 minutes of your reservation with all of the members of your party, they cancell your reservation and you get placed on the waiting list. Also, depending on who the chef is it can be hit or miss.
We went with our OOT guests the day after our wedding & were not so thrilled with the service, and the food was not as good as I had remembered it.
It can be a good experience, but it can be a little disappointing too.......sorry

The Bayou by far!!! I've been eating (and drinking -hehe)at this place for years!!! The food is great- really creative, flavorful dishes. You can get mild or extremely spicy (the gumbo is terrific). The staff is really fun & friendly too. I've tried Cooking With Jazz, it was ok, but I still think The Bayou is the best (if you can't get to New Orleans)!!!

I was very dissapointed with Nawlin's. I thought the food was very bland.

Re: Please recommend a cajun restaurant.
My FAV FAV FAV cajun restaurant in NYC is Great Jones Cafe.. it's a teeny tiny place on Great Jones Street right off Bowery (take the 6 to Astor Place or Bleecker and walk down Lafayette- take a left on Bowery)
It is very small- maybe 12-14 tables and they have daily specials w. a menu on the blackboard only- but I LOVE I T THERE and it's VERY affordable.
edited to say, Great Jones Cafe kicks Acme's REAR!!!
