Please recoomend a driving distance weekend trip?

this is a spin off of my anniversary post.

I mentioned that maybe I can surprise FH by booking the trip we decided was too expensive as an anniversary/birthday gift. I've been working a lot of hours, and also I cna put the $$ I was goign to put toward a b-day gift and aprty toward the trip.

Do you think this is a good idea? We were thinking of williamsburg. va (busch gardens), but it is a LONG drive..8 hours...also I'm interested in some other ideas. i haven't traveled much, so I don't know.. Please give me some ideas..and the less expensive the better. We were thinking of 3-4 days, depending on the drive time. I know for 3 days at BG with hotle included it was under $500, that's what I'm looking for. I want it to all be under $500 (wow that's a lot)

We stayed at an incredible B&B up in Lake George. We cannot wait to go back!
Cornerstone Victorian B&B

Also maybe the vineyards up by the Finger Lakes (Ithaca area) or out east.

MONTREAL!

the drive really isn't that bad and it really feels like you are 'away' because of the language thing.

I was going to suggest upstate! I am going to my college reunion in Ithaca in June and it is beautiful up there. It is 4 days long and we are going wine tasting, for a dinner cruise on the lake, swimming in the waterfalls...Really beautiful!

ETA: Just don't plan on going the weekend of Cornell or Ithaca reunions.

Newport, RI is a good 4 hour trip. The hotels are expensive, but if you stay in the next town & drive in ( like 10 minutes) & park a the vistors center, you can walk all around & it is less expensive.

Me and DH went to Williamsburg/Busch Gardens years ago! I liked it but it is VERY family oriented and you have to like having kids around all over the place. They were screaming in the pool, all over the lobby, even in the fancy restaurants. It was a little too much and we both agreed its much more suited for families.

I am looking into Hershey, PA. Quick 3 hour drive and they have some great resort/spas there....might be expensive though.

Boston is great too! THe Wyndham in Boston is pretty cheap and the rooms are beautiful...its only a few block from Quincy Market and so much fun!

I would definately vote Boston over Lake George. I've been to Boston a million times and love it- FH and I got engaged at a bed and breakfast not far from Boston. As for Lake George- we stopped at Lake George for dinner on our way home from Montreal and we couldnt' get out of there quick enough. We found it to be pretty horrible...we ate as fast as we could and left.

Newport is a really great place to hang out in for a long weekend, but it's all bed and breakfasts so it can get pricey. Kennebunkport Maine is really pretty and a lot of fun also.

Newport is VERY nice, but pricy.
