I just got off the phone with my SIL in florida. She is due Jan 27, and she had contractions last night. It is her first pregnancy, she told me she is 50% efaced(is that even a word) she is not dialated, the baby's heart rate is fine. They are keeping her for 48 hours, and she is on bedrest for the remainder of the pregnancy. They put her on steroids and other things, and hse said contractions are going away. Doctor said she was in pre term labor. I know this is not the 'norm' but how bad is this?

Im guessing she is about 25 weeks. If the baby was born today he/she would have a chance at survival. Preterm labor isnt good. But not being dialted is good, being effaced means the cervix is thinning in preparation for delivery. As long as she listens to her doc she should be fine till the baby is able to be delivered.

Just know that there is only so much a doc can do to prevent delivery. If a baby is going to come than a baby is going to come. But bedrest should help it by not letting the baby put pressure on the cervix.
If you get a chance ask your SIL to check with her doc about the meds they are giving her to stop her labor. I know my DH's cousins wife had preterm labor and they gave her shots of something now her daughter has no enamel on her teeth. She said she spoke to someone else in the dentists office when she was there to have her daughters teeth pulled and the woman also had the same shot.
