I had made invitations for my dad's surprise party using an invitation kit. They did come out really nice. However, FH is sold on the idea of making our own invites...I'm not so sure. I don't want it to look cheap. I wish I had a picture to show you of the one I made, but I don't. I have a while to think about it, I know. But I was curious about what you all thought...
UPDATE: Put picks of similar invites (scroll down) as well as the ones at the store i liked. #1 is the homemade paper, #2 is the one I like in the store.
ETA: here's a layout of the invite, i made a whole set (reception, RSVP, and direction cards) based on the latvian design i created out of various symbols prevalent in the church.
i thought it was a nice way to personalize and introduce the brown and ivory of our color theme... my mom figured out a cool way to package everything using vellum - i need to get my hands on the leftovers and will then post a pic...
I did it for my engagement party but I wouldn't do it for the wedding. It becomes such a hassle!

Re: Please vote: Homemade Invites???
I think it all depends on the type of affair you plan to have. If its going to be formal, homemade invites might not do the job. But if it will be theme based or more casual, then a quality homemade invitation might make it more personal.

Re: Please vote: Homemade Invites???
We are doing our own invites and are using an invite kit...I didn't think they looked cheap at all and it cost me a total of $100 for 150 invites and response cards with envelopes, the amount of money I saved alone was worth it to me, the invites we originally were going to get were $300 just for 100 invites.

we made ours for our e-party and people asked us where we got them done. it was def worth it. we plan on doing the same for the wedding. i just cannot justify spending over $500 on paper.

Especially when some people are going to say they can not come. I tried scanning it but it was not scanning right. I would need to take a picture, have to ask FH.

true, some people cannot make it, so they just toss it in the trash. its hard for me to throw that much cash away.

Re: Please vote: Homemade Invites???
ooooh. If anyone has more pictures, please post! Thanks! The kits at Target were 50 invites (with response cards and envelopes) for $20. I have a laser printer (unfortunately it only prints in black ) so printing them went pretty quick.
This is not the invitation, but it is similar to the paper I used which was ivory w/ the same border. I found it on david's bridal web page.
We made ours and they came out great! Everybody complemented them and many thought they were professional. (NO pic yet..need to get a digital camera!)
But word to the wise; make sure that you research the etiquette of wording and such first...I was so careful not to make any mistakes...because when you have help in a store..most of those decsions are made for you or you are advised...ALSO Be sure to mark or identify your responce cards some how..there was a whole thread on Un-Identifyable responce card mishaps! NOT FUN!

Re: Please vote: Homemade Invites???
This is a sample of the invites I fell in love with. For the invites, envelopes, and response cards they come out to about $250 for 75 (we will need more, mind you). My color is periwinkle too, so these had the color in them as well. Hmmm...$250 for 75 or $40 for 100...
I made invitations for my engagement party and got so many compliments on them, but I have to be honest. I would not make them for my wedding. Its a little bit of a hassle, plus the fact that I like raised lettering. Whatever you chose though will end up to be perfect for you and that is all that matters!

I do too, it has a simple elegance...
as far as the added stress for doing them yourselves, if you feel that you can do it with minimal damage then go for it! I did many of my invites myself.. the RD, the e-party, the bridal shower...and they all came out fine.

I like #1 better. That is great if you have the patience. I have been so stressed out I could not imagine making 164 invites
